Survey Uncovers a Stinky Situation

Roughly 36 percent of Canadians never wash their hockey gear and 23 percent said they wash it less than once a year, according to a survey done by Leger - with Purex laundry detergent. The survey also found seven percent of Canadians didn't mind the odor and 25 percent didn't know their gear could be washed.

USA Hockey Sets Third Straight
8-and-Under Participation Record

Paulina Doughtie from Antioch, Tenn., became USA Hockey's 115,695th 8-and-Under player in 2017-18, setting a single-season 8U participation record. It marked the third consecutive record-breaking season for USA Hockey in the 8U age classification.

"Hockey continues to grow at every level in the United States, and as our participation numbers indicate, the best is yet to come as these young players continue to play, love and excel," said Jim Smith, president of USA Hockey. "With initiatives like Try Hockey For Free Day and our American Development Model welcoming more and more young players to the sport, the sky's the limit for hockey in the U.S."

Pure Hockey Announces Partnership With NHL/NHLPA Learn To Play Program

Pure Hockey, the largest hockey retailer in the U.S. and a member of the Hockey Dealers Association, announced a partnership agreement where it will serve as the Retail Partner of the National Hockey League/National Hockey League Players Association Learn to Play Program for U.S. Clubs.

The partnership will allow Pure Hockey to provide an equipment fitting experience for young players and their families across the country through in-person fitting events at their retail stores and at strategic pop-up events in other markets. Pure Hockey will also develop an online fitting guide for participants unable to attend in-person fitting events.


Florida Panthers Opening Door for Adults

The Florida Panthers launched two new hockey programs. One of the sites where they will be held is the Florida Panthers Ice Den, which is an HDA member. 

The Panthers Adult "Learn to Play" program is designed to get those age 18 or older to experience ice hockey at the beginner level.  The Panthers "Learn to Skate" is designed to teach children ages 4 to 8 to skate at the beginner level.

The Panthers also have a "Learn to Play" program in its third year for first-time hockey participants ages 5-9 who are first-time USA Hockey registrants.

End of Season Brings Raw Emotion
for Nephew of Ex-NHL Player

Nine-year-old Brody Berard, the nephew of former NHL player Bryan Berard, wasn't afraid to let his emotions show with his teammates and coaches after his Woonsocket (Rhode Island) North Stars Mite team saw its season end. 

The Woonsocket organization was bought by the Providence Hockey Club. Knowing that many of his teammates will play for different organizations next year led Brody Berard to give his passionate postgame speech.

The collaboration for the purchase of hockey equipment by U.S. hockey dealers between HDA, the National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA) and SDC (Sports Distributors of Canada) continues to grow.
