Bree Zhang
Class of 2018
President of National Art Honor
Society, Bree Zhang has had four impressive years at North Hunterdon. Bree is also Vice President of Student Council, a member of Key Club, National Honor Society, English Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, and played Varsity Volleyball in 2016. Her favorite class at North was AP Language and AP Literature because both classes taught her how to write eloquently and cohesively as well as how to think, analyze, generate ideas, and make connections to larger schemas in this world. Outside of school, Bree is involved in many activities. Bree plays the Guzheng, a 21-stringed Chinese instrument. She has competed in many countries and performed at Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan, and McCarter Theater. Bree started the first guzheng class at Huaxia Bridgewater Chinese School, where she has taught for the past four years. She is the 1
st
chair guzheng of Music From China Youth Orchestra and has composed two pieces for the orchestra. Bree also loves oil painting and digital art. She was in charge of Public Relations and worked as Event Co-Director for the Princeton Chinese Music Festival. Bree volunteers as a Teacher Assistant at Hunterdon Art Museum, did research for a case report submitted for publication to Case Reports in Dentistry, and works as a dental assistance in the summer. Her favorite memories at North were when she made ice cream in AP Chemistry, coaching for the NHHS Junior Lions Volleyball Program, composing her first song in AP Music Theory, the day she read her “This I Believe Essay” in AP Language, the North vs Central game of her JV season, the days she played her guzheng for her AP Drawing class, and the night the National Art Honor Society hosted Lindsay Abromaitis.

Gwenyth Porter
Class of 2018
Senior, Gwenyth (Ianto) Porter has enjoyed the past four years at North Hunterdon. Ianto’s favorite class was World History with Mrs. Niznik. It was not until Mrs. Niznik's class that Ianto finally felt confident in history class, feel like he could succeed and enjoy history. Ianto is involved in North’s Arts & Literacy M
agazine
as an Editor in Chief for three of the four years he has been a member. He was in the Gender & Sexuality Alliance Club for all four years and the Treasurer for three of those years. In eleventh grade, Ianto was part of Mr. King’s group for taking the Biology Competency Test. He was also a member of the Ski Club. Ianto was previously involved in the 4-H Goat Club during high school and has been involved in the Sierra Club. He works at the It’s a Miracle Dog Spa, is involved in the Clinton United Methodist Church’s Youth Group, and volunteers at church on Sundays. With the youth group, on one mission trip, he received an award for being a hard worker on the construction site. Ianto’s favorite memories from the past four years include the relationship the school enabled him to have; which helped him develop and is a strong factor in who he is today, after the relationship ended. He also values earning a perfect score on an English essay, something that always seemed impossible. Ianto gladly remembers meeting with his counselor and his “shadower”, who are good resources in his high school life. This school is where he started one of the healthiest relationships he’s had in his life (a platonic one). Next year, Ianto plans to attend either Drew University or RVCC to possibly major in English.

Sophia Callari
Class of 2018
Senior, Sophia Callari has loved the sport of softball since she started playing tee ball at a young age. Sophia has been playing competitively for eight years and has played for North all four years of high school. She is a positive role model and supportive teammate for her sisters on and off the field. Sophia plays first base for North Hunterdon and third base for her travel team. She also plays for the Del Val Lightning and Skylands Pride year round. The North team’s biggest goal for the season is to get back to Kean University to play for the state title. Last year the Lady Lions came up short of this goal, but their hard work and dedication this year will pay off. Sophia was awarded MVP of the JV softball team her sophomore year by Coach Schaefer. She is a part of Key Club, National Honor Society, and Science Honor Society. Sophia will continue playing softball at Cedar Crest College next year while studying to get her Master’s Degree in Forensics.

She also made First Team All-Group, Area, Conference, and County. Maggie set a record last year for single-season strikeouts at 240. She has been playing softball since she was in the third grade. She is also in National Math Honor Society, National Honor Society, Teen PEP, Relay for Life, and Interact. She coaches and volunteers with the North Hunterdon Youth Softball program because she enjoys giving back to the organization where she started by teaching young girls the sport she loves so much. The first ever "North's Got Talent Show" was held on Friday, March 23rd at 7:00 pm in the North Hunterdon High School Theatre and it was a success! Approximately 200 students, teachers, and community members came out to support the Girl Up hosted event. There were 15 student performances and 2 teachers performances, including a surprise dance performance directly following intermission by a group of 17 faculty members, which was one of the many highlights of the evening. Mr. Kevin Byrne, substitute teacher in the district, and talented in his own right, announced the event - making some light jokes and creating filler during set-up for performances. All seemed to enjoy his fun commentary! Winners included- 3rd place duo- senior, Luke Wain, on guitar and 10 year old future "lioness", Kat Wolf, on vocals performing Jason Mraz's "Lucky"; 2nd place- senior, Emily Decker singing Beyonce's "If I Were a Boy"; and 1st place- senior, Victoria Valendo on guitar and vocals to Mumford and Sons "Babel". Luke was a member of the State Championship-winning varsity football team this year. Emily Decker loves to perform and plans to major in theatre next year in college. Victoria Valendo plays multiple musical instruments and has been singing most of her life. She will pursue a career in music.
Over $1,000 was raised for Girl Up, which supports girls in underprivileged countries around the world, providing education and basic healthcare for them in order to help lift villages and nations from poverty. Thank you for your support of our talented students and of Girl Up!

Raising Healthy Children: Resiliency
Presented by George Scot, Family Therapist, Director at Center for Counseling Services
Climate change has been a hot topic for decades, but what about the climate in the home, or the climate in the school, or in the classroom? Has that climate changed and is that a contributing factor to student struggles? The answer is yes, and the good news is there are solutions. With understanding comes insight. Interpretation drives intervention. When we know what the contributing factors are, then we are better prepared to make changes that benefit all of our children. Helping parents understand creates partnerships. Topics discussed will include: Increase in number of children prescribed and taking psychotropic medication and referred for psychiatric evaluations, adolescent use of drugs/alcohol, and self-injury.
