Stained Glass is a beautiful art form that has been around for centuries. Some of the oldest examples date from 686 AD and are at St. Paul’s monastery in Jarrow, England. Stained glass was originally created to let light into buildings and places of worship. Over time, stained glass windows became a way to teach people who could not read. By looking at the painted scenes in the glass, people could learn about the stories of the Bible and religious teachings.
Today, stained glass continues to inspire people of the majesty and beauty of the Lord. It reminds people of the awe and wonder of the Lord while reminding them of important values and lessons. GABC’s Senior Associate Pastor, Ken Warren says “The original purpose of stained glass was to teach Bible stories. Our two windows do just that. When you understand the symbols contained in our two windows, you “hear” the gospel.
The beautiful stained glass window in the Worship Center of Green Acres Baptist Church brings a central focus within the building as it stands over the baptistery that sits above the choir loft. You see it every Sunday but have you really looked at it lately? The Window of Worship was created and installed by Hogan Studios (from California) when the building opened in 2001. There are eight biblical symbols found in the window that express the Good News of Christ expressed through the picture of baptism.
Over the next few weeks, as you are seated waiting for worship services to begin, see if you can find these eight symbols. In next month’s newsletter we will share with you a description of the artist who created the window. We will also include information about The Window of Evangelism that can be seen from the outside of the Worship Center on Troup Hwy. (This is a great time of year to step outside and look at the Window of Evangelism.)
