A Weekend of Marches, Prayer and Palms

By Lori Korleski Richardson, Interim Communications Director

BLBmarch4ourlives
Bishop Barry leads the marchers in prayer.
In Sacramento and other locales throughout the diocese, it was a weekend of prayer and protest. Prayer, yes, because we remember the day Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, to waving palms and shouted hosannas - but this year, the day before was marked by many with a protest  against gun violence.

About 75 Sacramento-area Episcopalians gathered in Crocker Park around 9:30 a.m. Bishop Barry lead them in  prayer and Archdeacon Gary Brown read the gospel. The group then joined thousands more on the march to the state Capitol, where teenagers and Mayor Darrell Steinberg spoke. In Santa Rosa, a group of about 100 from three Episcopal churches gathered at Incarnation and marched downtown, where they were greeted with shouts of joy by those already in the square. And in Arcata, the rain and cold didn't stop the thousand strong who assembled there, including a group from Christ Church, Eureka, with Archdeacon Pam Gossard and Rector Daniel London. Members from St. Paul's, Benicia, attended a March for Our Lives event on First  Street there.

On Sunday, the Rev. Pamela Dolan, rector of St. Martin, Davis, delighted the faithful with not one, but two charming donkeys who marched in procession around the courtyard.  At Trinity Cathedral, Bishop Barry took part in the blessing of the palm crosses as the congregation gathered in front of the cathedral on Capitol Avenue, and celebrated the Eucharist after they filed into the pews inside.
FROM THE BISHOP SEARCH COMMITTEE
Please Keep the Bishop Search Process in Your Prayers

The Bishop Search Committee asks that you continue to pray for the search process; we encourage you to add this to your Prayers of the People as a congregation:

Almighty God,  giver of every good gift,  look graciously upon your church
and so guide the minds of those  who shall choose a bishop for this diocese,
and those who offer themselves as candidates,  that we may receive a faithful pastor  who will care for your people  and equip us for our ministries,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

CDSP Youth Ministry Symposium

Nine people from our diocese attended the Church Divinity School of the Pacific's Youth Ministry Symposium on Saturday, March 17 in Berkeley. Said Julie Vice, far right in the photo above, " I would have to say that I really enjoyed the creativity that Mark (featured speaker Mark Yaconelli) brought to the day and to his approach to ministry with youth. Mark's focus on relationship and individual programming was very useful.  I thought it was wonderful to also gather with others who are doing this work where we could listen and learn from each other as well." The symposium is an annual event for parents, youth ministers and volunteers, and as CDSP says, "clergy leaders who care about the spiritual lives of young people - and their own!"

St. James, Yuba City, Provides REST to Its Community

Each year during winter, the members of St. James of Jerusalem in Yuba City prepare and serve a few night's worth of hot meals for about 30 homeless guests who are sleeping overnight in a local church. The Regional Emergency Shelter Team (REST) is an organization based on the teachings of Jesus that partners with participating churches, congregations and other community and faith based organizations to provide cold-weather shelter and warm meals to families, single women and couples who are homeless in the Yuba-Sutter area.

REST targets those who are seeking emergency housing due to their situation of being homeless or what is termed as "precariously housed" in the Yuba-Sutter region - people who live in vacant buildings, cars, or dwellings where more than one family coexists. The program first opened its doors 8 years ago, and has been working every winter since. This outreach of local churches (including St. James) fills just over 2,500 beds each winter, each with a hot evening meal and morning breakfast.
