Heroes of the Week

Sue Celek

Congratulations to this week's Heroes Chris and Sue! We hope you enjoy your up-close parking spot.

A Note to Chris Spurgin, Middle School Math Teacher
Chris, you are so deserving of being recognized for the Hero Highlight. Your countless sacrifice and dedication to your students is both admirable and inspirational. You have given up many lunch breaks and afternoons to help students become amazing math Scholars and you're always doing it with a willing heart and attitude. In the future, when your students are in their high school and college math classes, they will definitely remember both the skills and content you taught them but more importantly the compassion and care you showed them.

Great Job Chris!

A Note to Sue Celek, Community Connector:
Sue Celek: You are one of the people I admire most in this world! You are a true servant leader. Your love for Jesus is evident in everything that you do! I am certain that my appreciation of everything you have done, and will do, for this school and our kiddos is shared by everyone. You are amazing! Love, Jen Crowell :)

Sue Celek: Humble Servant! The wisdom Sue brings into every situation is so vast. Yet, her disposition is always humble, always slow to speak. She is steadfast!

Our Pastors Chapel has become a special tradition here at Mariners Christian School. Each year we invite pastors from the churches our MCS families attend to come and enjoy a breakfast together, and then worship with our students in chapel... click for the continuation of the letter from Mrs. Celek.  A hard copy of this letter along with an invitation for your student to share with his/her pastor or leader was sent home today with each child.  Please look for it and pass the invitation along as appropriate. Thank you!

We have also sent a letter and invitation to our local pastors but we do encourage you to have your student hand-deliver the invitation that was sent home to their pastor or leader. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Celek at [email protected].

Elementary Spiritual Emphasis Week
Spiritual Emphasis Week kicked off for our elementary students in a chapel with Taylor Bedoya, Children's Pastor at Canopy Church, presenting the theme, "The Upside Down Kingdom." Using a king's crown and a crown of thorns, she contrasted the concept of an earthly king and the "upside down and opposite" reality of our King Jesus! Jesus came to serve, not to be served, and to pay a price for the people of His Kingdom.

It was our goal to embrace  Hebrews 12:2 - For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross....  Each day the students  "studied how He did it"  through devotions created for the classroom exploring the attributes of "A Forgiving King" and "A Humble King." Our MPR space became a place for quiet reflection and response available to each elementary class.

A unique tradition for our fifth graders during SEW is the opportunity to hear "The Chair Talk,"  a truly challenging and impactful message from Mr. John Hellriegel, MCS Bible Teacher. He encourages the students to examine where they are in their faith journey, and where they would like to be, using the visual illustration of three chairs. If you have a fifth grader, have him or her explain the three chairs, and talk as a family about what this looks like.

In honor of SEW, Mrs. Dogterom had her technology classes discuss what "The Upside Down Kingdom" looks like, and how we can live like citizens of the Upside Down Kingdom while here on earth. The students talked about ways we can serve others and what sets us apart from the rest of the world. The students also thought about what Easter means and how it connects with this year's SEW theme. As a result, the students used a design program on their Chromebooks to paint what Easter means to them. Click to view their designs. They also had the opportunity to take part in a whole elementary level poster project by answering the question, "How can we be citizens of the Upside Down Kingdom?" Click to view their answers.

Spiritual Emphasis Week
"His Kingdom Come"
Stay tuned for full details about Spiritual Emphasis Week in our next e-news. Please visit our middle school Instagram page @MCS_middleschool_LYFE for daily recaps so far, as we embrace the coming of His Kingdom.
On March 19th,  Middle School welcomed Scott Williams, co-pastor at Narrative, as our guest speaker in Chapel!  Scott introduced our Spiritual Emphasis Week theme, as he spoke about the state of God's people before Jesus entered the scene 2,000 years ago.  At that time, His people were experiencing a 400 year silence from any communication with God, and they were feeling lost, forgotten, and hopeless.  Meanwhile, behind the scenes, God's plan was being carefully orchestrated for just the right moment.  Then one day, a burst of light breaks through the darkness, and Jesus enters the scene! In what ways do we need a Savior in our life right now?  Where are we experiencing that brokenness, and do we have a longing for the Savior?  This week, we are diving into Spiritual Emphasis Week, as we experience what it means to see "His Kingdom Come."

Shalimar Gathering April 13th
Save the date! Our fourth visit to Shalimar is almost here! Each visit, MCS students share the love of Jesus, learn from, and simply get to know our neighbors on Shalimar Drive just 5 miles away. We build bridges across cultures and connect over activities, Bible studies, games, and more! It has been simply beautiful to see God at work during this sweet time together. To come, fill out the permission slip and turn it in to Miss Seaman or Miss Peña on or before Wednesday, April 11th. We'll meet outside the MCS front office after school on Friday to head over to Shalimar at 3:15pm. We plan to be back at MCS at 6:45pm. We also utilize parent drivers, so if you are available to drive, please indicate how many students you can take on the permission slip.

Hope your child is able to take part in the amazing work God is doing through the MCS/Shalimar partnership!

Spring Dress Code Reminders
It's springtime - flowers are growing, trees are growing, and your children are growing! Unfortunately, their uniforms can't grow with them, which means the uniform that fit your student at the beginning of the year may no longer fit appropriately now. Please take a few moments this week with your student to make sure their uniforms fit well and still follow middle school dress code guidelines. As a reminder, skirt hemlines should be no shorter than 3 inches above the knee, and pants must be full-length; no folded, shortened, or frayed pant legs. If you have any questions about uniform or dress code guidelines or how these policies are implemented, follow this link to the MS Uniform Guidelines page here, see our MS Uniform Reminders page here, or contact Mrs. Niles at [email protected].
