Sutter Middle students place first in STEAM tournament 
A team of Sutter Middle sixth grade students placed first in a STEAM tournament called Destination Imagination Region O.N.E.

The tournament was held in Roseville at Eich Middle School on March 3. The winning student team (YMNKON) included students: Sonya Hong, Avery Bridgham, Micha Mal, Noah Finkel, Erik Ma, and Druva Raju. The team received top scores in the competition "Unlikely Attractions," by using project-based learning techniques in the scientific challenge. 

Close to 100 student teams from across the region participated in one of the seven STEAM-based challenges in either elementary, middle or senior level competitions. 

The Sutter Middle student team will advance to the D1 California State Tournament to compete against over two dozen teams in Clovis April 6-8 in their Scientific Challenge, for an opportunity to earn a place in the D1 Global International Tournament. 
Join us for Drug Awareness Forums & learn warning signs
Join us for a conversation with experts and law enforcement about local drug trends among youth on Monday, April 9 in Folsom or Monday, April 23 in Rancho Cordova.

A community panel will discuss trends in drug abuse including Xanax, marijuana, alcohol, vaping and other substances, as well as resources available in the community, and ways to support your child. 

The Drug Awareness Forum on April 9 is being held at Folsom High Theater from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. 

The Drug Awareness Forum on April 23 is being held at Cordova High's Performing Arts Center from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. 

Dinner and childcare will be provided at both forums for those who attend. 
Community Readers wins statewide communication award
Folsom Cordova's  Community Readers Program is the recipient of the 2017-2018 CalSPRA Excellence in Communication Award.

Community Readers, is a volunteer tutoring program that helps students struggling to read strengthen their literacy skills.

The program was honored at the 2018 annual CalSPRA conference in San Diego on March 3. 
The award was accepted by Angela Griffin Ankhelyi, FCUSD's Community Outreach Coordinator.

Community Readers is the previous recipient of a 2017 Influence Award from the Public Relations Society of America California Capital Chapter.

Students hold peaceful dialogue and activities on school safety
Students across our district on March 14 shared their voices in a dialogue about school safety and led civil, peaceful, and somber demonstrations to stand in solidarity with victims of violence. 
 
They helped lead voter registration drives, held forums on school safety, and participated in character campaigns. 
 
Here's a video snapshot of some of the student-led activities from three of our high schools: Cordova, Folsom and Vista del Lago.  
Folsom, Vista del Lago finish strong in HP Codewars competition
A team from Folsom High placed first and a team at Vista del Lago High placed second in the HP Codewars Competition in Roseville on March 3. 
 
The teams were challenged with computer coding problems to solve that day at different difficulty levels and were timed on solving them during the competition. 
 
The students that placed first on the Folsom High team were seniors Tommy Nguyen, Tamir Offen, and  junior Brian Xu.
 
The students that placed second on the Vista del Lago team were seniors Jadon Fowler, Lawrence Wong and freshman Stella Wong.
 
Over 200 students from as far as the Los Angeles area competed in the HP Codewars Competition and was open to all high school students in California. 
High school artists: Enter the Congressional Art Competition!
Congressman Ami Bera's office is accepting entries for the 2018 Congressional Art Competition for high school students. 

The winner will receive two free round-trip tickets to see his or her artwork in our nation's capital. 

High school entrants must reside within California's   7th congressional district. All artwork must be completed by a high school student and have an accompanying student release form. Entries must be the original artwork of the student. Accepted mediums: paintings, drawings, and weigh no more than 15 pounds. Framed dimensions cannot exceed 28" x 28" x 4".

The deadline to enter is April 6 by 5 p.m. Submit at 8950 Cal Center Drive, Building 3 Suite 100 in Sacramento.

Finalists will be selected by a panel of individual judges at a later date. The winner will be selected by the public, which will have the opportunity to vote online.

Cordova High presents Little Shop of Horrors
 
Cordova High's Drama Department presents the musical Little Shop of Horrors. 
 
Book and lyrics by Howard Ashman. Music by Alan Menken. 
 
Cordova High has not produced a musical in 20 years, and the production of Little Shop of Horrors was made possible by a grant from the American Theatre Wing.
 
Shows run Thursday April 12 and Friday April 13 at 7 p.m. Saturday April 14, there is a show at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. 
 
Cordova High is located at 2239 Chase Drive in Rancho Cordova.

Parenting the Love and Logic Way
 
Register now for six sessions designed to help parents equip their children with character, compassion, problem solving skills.
 
Parents will learn how to stay calm when your kids do incredibly upsetting things, set enforceable limits, help them learn from mistakes so they don't repeat them, how to avoid power struggles and arguments, getting your kids to do chores without nagging them or bribing, and how to avoid enabling and to empower them.

The FCUSD Board of Education held its regular meeting on Thursday, March 15 at 6 p.m. in the Education Services Center Board Room, 1965 Birkmont Drive in Rancho Cordova.
