MARCH 2018

What you're looking at is...
(drum roll please)
Shumla's new Headquarters!!

On Highway 90 in Comstock is a lonely double wide that has been waiting for the right family to come and make it their own. It was abandoned by the Border Patrol folks when they got their fancy schmancy new Comstock facility just east of town. The County took possession of the property and our friend Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez went to bat for Shumla to make it ours. (THANK YOU, SHERIFF MARTINEZ!)

It may look a little worse for wear right now, but it's got great bones. It just needs a little love (and some floor tiles and a lot of paint).

It's already wired for high-tech equipment and very secure. Best of all, it's BIG! Our entire team will be able to have offices in the same building! What's more...our current office can turn back into a guest house, which means we can hire more interns and welcome more volunteers!

There is space in the new HQ for our plasma oxidation laboratory, the servers and super computers, our interns and volunteers and, of course, space for our amazing and incredible staff to stretch out and do the groundbreaking work you know and love them for.

HELP US FIX IT UP!

This gift of space will help make Shumla more efficient and effective in the long-term.  Here's some of the items we need to make it ready for us to move in.

 1) Interior paint - $500
 2) Floor tiles - $500
 3) Electrical outlets - $900
 4) Ceiling tiles - $300
 5) New locks - $200
 6) Cleaning supplies - $300
 7) New blinds - $300

CLICK HERE to help! Just $10 will buy us 5 outlet covers, $20 will buy us a mop, $30 will buy us a gallon of paint or a stack of floor tile! Thank you! We can't wait to welcome you to our new space.

Welcome Jade Tellez,
Our New Plasma Oxidation Lab Intern!

Jade is joining us from Indiana. She just completed her B.S. degree in Chemistry at Purdue University. When not wearing laboratory safety goggles, she loves to paint and draw. She comes from a very artistic family who, having no background in chemistry, have had some difficulty understanding her field of study. In joining Shumla, Jade has been able to combine her love of chemistry and art with the added bonus of helping her family connect with her work. She is currently working with the plasma oxidation system to prepare rock art samples for radiocarbon dating. She's picked up the tricky process really quickly and is already able to prepare samples virtually unaided. That's really impressive!

Join us in welcoming Jade!
We're Off to Washington D.C.!
The Shumla Researchers are headed to the  Society for American Archaeology Meeting!
We take pride in our scientific research and methods. We love to share our discoveries and experiences with our peers. Conferences like the SAA annual meeting allow us to communicate our research methods and findings to our colleagues and also receive advice, thoughts, and evaluations from them. It keeps us up-to-date with the latest in our field and tied in with those (like us) who are on the cutting-edge of archaeological science. Plus, its FUN!

We'll give you the full run down of our presentations, posters and shenanigans in next month's eNewsletter. Wish us luck!
Alexandria Project Update
  • The team finished documenting site 64 yesterday!
  • We published the newest blog post: "Shumla Chemistry Lab - Part 1"
  • Did you miss Motif Monday? It was all about the rabbit stick motif.
  • Site 63 was a doozy - it was flea infested! No bueno!
