New Jersey March for Our Lives Events

Saturday, March 24, student advocates and their family members in communities across the state will assemble to advocate for the passage of legislation that will protect and save children from gun violence.

March 26th Lobby Day for Earned Sick Time Bill 

Join NASW and other members of the Time to C are Coalition on March 26th i n Trenton to lobby in support of The New Jersey Earned Sick & Safe Days Act (A1827/ S2171).

The bill would allow all workers in NJ to earn paid sick days to recover from illness or care for a sick loved one . It would also allow victims of domestic violence and sexual assault to use sick days to recover and handle relocation as well as legal issues related to their assault.

Harriet Bloomfield Scholarship Application Deadline Extended

NASW-NJ is now accepting applications for the 2018 Harriet Bloomfield Scholarship.

The application deadline is Monday, April 16, 2018.
 
To apply you must be an NASW Member in good standing and be enrolled as a social work student (BSW or MSW) for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Ethics of Social Justice Advocacy: From the Micro to the Macro

Now, more than ever perhaps, the call for social workers to engage in social justice activities is front and center. Whether the focus on international atrocities, or local causes such combating racism, sexism, xenophobia, homo- and transphobia, or religious bigotry, or poverty and environmental issues, social justice is a fundamental component of who we are and what we do. This workshop will explore social justice as a function of social work and will engage the participants in discussions of the ethical concerns that may arise out of this work. Topics will include engaging clients in social justice work, disconnects between social justice efforts and employer limitations, how far should a social worker go in standing up for social justice, and guidelines for addressing ethical decision making and dilemmas in social justice work.

2017 was a momentous year for New Jersey Social Workers. NASW published long-awaited revisions to The NASW Code of Ethics and The Standards for Technology in Social Work Practice and New Jersey passed its first Telemedicine and Telehealth Law. This workshop will review how these critical changes impact Social Workers' use of Technology in their day to day work.

New Medicare Cards Coming Soon

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is taking steps to remove Social Security numbers from Medicare cards. Between April 2018 and April 2019, CMS will issue new Medicare cards to all beneficiaries. Each card will include a new unique, randomly assigned number called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI).

Beginning April 2018, clinical social workers who are Medicare providers in private practice will need to update their patient files to include the new MBI number and use it on the CMS-1500 form when submitting a claim. In addition, other systems may need to be updated to accept the new MBI format.

New Jersey Puerto Rico Relief Commission Will Connect Families to Resources 

Per an article from TapIntoNewark, the Commission will work with state agencies to examine services already provided to Puerto Rico and Puerto Rican evacuees in New Jersey. The Commission is also collaborating with federal agencies to expedite processes that will benefit Puerto Ricans in New Jersey in need of services, as well as non-profit agencies that provide safety-net services to all those who have been displaced.
