Cascading Awareness - our first  school invitation to talk about Poverty.

Shirley Boxem of HCIA and I  took the message about poverty in Dufferin County out to the grade 5/6 class at The Maples on February 28th. Utilizing our Strategic Framework "wheel of poverty"  the students participated in an exercise to articulated what poverty is and what  its impacts could be  across  the indicators that reflect the different dimensions of poverty. They demonstrated a good grasp of the issues. Next we had them match the summary of findings numbers to the indicators and they were surprised about the extent of poverty in their own community. A final exercise was generating solutions and our youth generation have some good ideas which we will share with the Poverty Reduction Task Force.
POVERTY REDUCTION

Over the past year, the Government of Canada has travelled across the country, engaging with thousands of Canadians, especially those who have lived experience with poverty, to hear their stories, ideas and feedback about reducing poverty. Today the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, announced the release of the What We Heard report, a summary of the feedback gathered during the Poverty Reduction Strategy engagement process.
