March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month
Did you know? Problem gambling affects 7+ million Americans. According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, the term “problem gambling” refers to the urge to gamble, despite harmful and negative consequences or a desire to stop. This definition may also include the condition known as “pathological gambling,” a progressive addiction whereby a person gambles compulsively to such an extent that the activity has a severe negative effect on his/her job, relationships, mental health and/or other important aspects of life.

Help is available. Early intervention and treatment services are available to residents of Stark County through a network of qualified, caring service providers.

Sam Quinones
April 2: Sam Quinones (author, Dreamland ) at Canton Palace Theatre
Award-winning journalist, storyteller, former LA Times reporter and author, Sam Quinones, discusses the opiate epidemic sweeping the nation at the Canton Palace Theatre on April 2.

His book, Dreamland , recounts twin stories of drug marketing in the 21st Century: A pharmaceutical corporation flogs its legal new opiate prescription painkiller as nonaddictive. Meanwhile, immigrants from a small town in Mexico devise a method for retailing black-tar heroin like pizza in the US, and take that system nationwide, riding a wave of addiction to prescription pills from coast to coast. The collision of those two forces has led to America's deadliest drug scourge in modern times.

Sam Quinones is a 2008 recipient of the Maria Moors Cabot prize and 1998 recipient of an Alicia Patterson Fellowship.

Sam will speak about his book and answer audience questions. The evening will end with a book signing. Friends of the Library volunteers will have copies available for purchase if you don’t yet own a copy.
