The 1833 Emerson fire and next steps
Denver Community Planning and Development works with the metro area's construction professionals every day. Our hearts go out to the families of those who died in the fire at the 1833 Emerson construction site last week, and to the entire construction team associated with the project.

Others who live or work on the block have also been affected, and are unable to occupy their buildings for the time being because of damage from heat and smoke.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. The Denver Fire Department, the Denver Police Department and OSHA are investigating it, and we are supporting their work in any way we can.

Denver Community Planning and Development teams have been in the area since the fire occurred on Wednesday, assessing damage to nearby buildings, talking with building owners and occupants, and performing inspections related to new permits for repairs.

For buildings that may have been damaged significantly, the city has retained a third party to do a preliminary assessment to give owners a baseline scope of work for which they'll need to enlist their own professionals.

If you are a contractor applying for related permits, please indicate on your e-permits application or in person at our permit counter that your project is for repairs to buildings damaged by the 1833 Emerson fire. We are committed to expediting these permits to get displaced residents and businesses back into their buildings quickly and safely.
