Faculty Retreat - Register by this Friday, January 24!
All Harper faculty (full-time & adjunct) are cordially invited to attend the Faculty Retreat 2020: "Full TILT: Transparency in Learning and Teaching to Increase Student, Faculty, and Institutional Success."
Join us at the retreat in March when Angela Rasmussen from Spokane Community College will guide us through the research, principles, and applications of TILT-ing our work. Our efforts to increase transparency from the course to institutional level can demystify the college experience to provide underserved students with more equitable engagement. These evidence-based strategies will make clear the value of course content and support positive outcome expectancies. Approaching our work through TILT-ed lenses can also enhance communications, meetings, and initiatives to streamline and enrich our collaborative efforts across campus. Faculty examples of "TILT-ed" materials for teaching and work with colleagues will be shared, and participants will generate ideas for how they can TILT their work.

Studies show that community building can increase retention, improve students' cognitive intellectual development, and promote contributions to society. Find out why it's important for you to know how to create community, and hear ideas on how to build community from presenter Dr. Milton Cox, Lilly Conference director at Miami University and editor-in-chief of the Journal on Excellence in College Teaching. Our Harper faculty facilitator for this session is Margaret Bilos, Speech. Come join Margaret and the Academy for a great discussion and lunch. (CEUs: 0.1)
We all have blind spots in our work. For instructors, one way to shed light on these blind spots is to invite a colleague into our classroom for a collaborative peer observation. This non-evaluative, non-judgmental approach creates shared ownership of the challenges we face as practitioners. The use of a structured protocol for observing instructor actions, student actions, and instructor/student interactions serves to hold up a mirror so that we can see our teaching in a different light and have autonomy in making changes that align with our values. (CEUs: 0.5)

Information Technology has nearly completed the upgrade of all Windows-based computers (PCs) to Windows 10. Many of you have been on Windows 10 for a while; others are getting comfortable with it. If your computer has not been converted yet, IT will be contacting you. To help you adjust to Windows 10, IT has put together several

Have an idea for a new project? Want to develop or pilot a program or service, but lack the funding to support it? The Harper College Educational Foundation has up to $100,000 available through the Resource for Excellence (RFE) grant program which could be the answer to those questions. Two upcoming workshops are being offered to help applicants with completing the grant application package.
Harper Wellness and Human Resources Professional Enrichment are offering a 90-minute workshop where participants will engage in improvisational games that encourage and enhance communication, collaboration, and innovation in the workplace and beyond.

Equity Literacy Project Launch
The Art of Teaching for Equity Community of Practice has been working with partners from high school districts 211, 214, and 220 as part of a collaborative project to promote awareness around equity issues.
The CoP started meeting with a small group of high school staff and administrators in 2017 to begin to discuss the equity issues in our schools. Over the next two years, a collaborative group of more than 30 participants representing Harper and all three high school districts came together with the goal of creating a shared lexicon related to equity issues so that educators in the area could approach this work with a similar understanding of the issues and literally talk the same language while seeking to improve our institutional climates.

ILCCO Growing Online Learning Conference
The ILCCO (Illinois Community Colleges Online) Growing Online Learning Conference is scheduled for February 11-13. The theme of this year's free, web-based conference is Humanizing the Online Environment: Increasing Instructor Presence and Enhancing Student Engagement.
Sessions include Making Instructional Videos Work for Instructors & Students, Increasing Faculty Presence in an Online Speech Course, and Online Facilitation: A Guide for New to Online Faculty.
All sessions on February 11 and 13 will be streamed in the Academy (Building F, Room F315), so feel free to stop in and experience the sessions with your colleagues.
