FDA Misses Deadline To Ban Devices Used To Shock Those With Special Needs
[Source: Disability Scoop]

The Food and Drug Administration missed its own deadline to finalize a ban on devices used to administer electric shocks on people with developmental disabilities.

The agency said in late 2018 that it intended to finalize a 2016 proposal to disallow so-called electrical stimulation devices. At the time, the FDA said regulations would be issued by the end of 2019, but to date, no action has been taken.

Why Many Children with Autism Have Oral Health Problems
[Source;  Medical X-Press]

The World Health Organisation estimates that one in 160 children around the world has an autism spectrum disorder. Autism is a condition related to the development of the brain and is usually noticeable by the time a child is three years old. Statistics aren't available for any African country, so researchers like me in South Africa are using international prevalence rates.

Study: 1 in 4 Kids With Autism May Be Undiagnosed
[Source: Psych Central]

A new study suggests that one in four children under age 8 with  autism spectrum disorder, most of them black or Hispanic, are undiagnosed.

For the study, researchers from Rutgers University in New Jersey looked at the education and medical records of 266,000 children who were 8 years old in 2014. The team sought to determine how many of the children who had presented with symptoms of the disorder were not clinically diagnosed or receiving services.

Scientists Shed Light on Surprising Visual Development Patterns
[Source: Medical X-Press]

Long before a baby opens its eyes for the first time, the brain is ready to start decoding visual stimuli.
In a new study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC neuroscientists reveal a surprising clue about how this intricate visual processing system forms during early brain development.

It starts with retinal cell growth. These cells line the back of the eye and process and transmit light-derived signals along their axons, which make up the optic nerve. The axons grow from the

Pinterest Pinboard of the Week: Groundhog Day Activities for Tx
Groundhog Day is fun.  Well, maybe not for Bill Murray but the kids really love it.

Groundhog Day is a fun theme which can advance many therapy goals with children.  The holiday's interesting  history and tradition lend themselves to a variety of conversations about prediction, teaching about shadows and more.

Pediatric Therapy Corner: What is Self Regulation?
[Source: Your Therapy Source]

Self-regulation is the ability to monitor and manage your energy states, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in ways that are acceptable and produce positive results such as well-being, loving relationships, and learning.

It is how we deal with stressors and as such, lays the foundation for all other activity. Developing this ability requires self-awareness, emotional intelligence, efficient filtering of sensory stimulation,  coping effectively with stress, relating well to others, and sustaining focus.

School Psych Corner:  Teaching SEL Isn't Easy, But Worth the Work
[Source:  Education Week]

SEL has an $11 return on every $1 investment. So what are we waiting for?
Not long ago the two of us gave a talk to a group of mental-health professionals about the teaching of emotional intelligence. Afterwards, a leading child psychiatrist approached us to applaud our appeal for greater social-emotional learning (SEL) in schools. The psychiatrist added: "We're going to need another 8,000 child psychiatrists in the United States to deal with all of the mental-health problems our children are having."

PT Corner: Wheelbarrow Walking
[Source:  Starfish Therapies]

Do any of you remember doing wheelbarrow races as a child? I do! I remember thinking it was hysterical that someone was holding my feet and I was racing someone else on my hands. Well, as much fun as that was, wheelbarrow walking is actually a great tool to incorporate with kids to help them get and stay strong.

AAC Corner: Supporting Language Growth in AAC Learners
[Source:  PrAACtical AAC/Carol Zangari]

Here's a sobering thought. Relatively few users of AAC use grammatically correct sentences when they communicate. There are lots reasons for that, but in this post, we focus on understanding the things that contribute to that problem. In Part 2, we'll look at ways to address the issue.

Let's reflect on the problem of why many AAC learners don't communicate with complete, grammatically correct utterances.
