Lenten Giving Opportunities:
If "giving more" is on Lenten practice as well as "giving up," please consider these opportunities for giving to those in need:
  • CAIN (Church Active in Northside) Blessing Bags - pick up bags in Hannaford Hall.
  • Tender Mercies: Help to make and/or serve a dinner on March 25
  • Food Collection for St. Andrew's Pantry: The battle between the Loaves (9:30) and Fishes (10:30) is raging on! As of last Sunday, the Fishes are ahead with 235 items of food, while the Loaves have collected 166 items, with more items added on Sunday morning. Besides competing for Food Drive Champions, each week, let's also try for another goal: to collect at least ONE THOUSAND items by Easter! We are keeping count each week, so let's fill the boxes, deliver and refill again - and win the battle against hunger!
  • Coffee Hour this Sunday is hosted by Calvary Youth. The Youth are collecting donations to benefit Calvary Outreach. Please be generous on Sunday for this fundraiser.

Sunday: The Beginning of the End Before the Beginning Again

At the Eucharist during Lent, we pray to God that we may "cleanse our hearts, and prepare for joy for the Paschal feast," the greatest of which comes on April 1, Easter Day, when we celebrate the resurrection of the sacrificed Lamb of God.

But that is still to come. This Sunday, we will observe two events at once, and the name of the day reflects its dual, and conflicting, nature: "Palm Sunday: The Sunday of the Passion." In this service, we will experience the high of Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem and then-surprise, surprise!-we will descend into the low of Jesus' arrest and execution by the Romans.

The story of the Passion is usually a reading of the account by one of the Gospel writers: Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John. Calvary's tradition for a number of years is to have a specially-commissioned Passion Play written by Charles Parsons.

This year, we are honored and privileged to hear a new Passion Play written by him: The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, as Experienced by Joseph of Arimathea. In this, as in other plays he has written for Palm Sunday, Charles gives us the perspective of a relatively minor, but important, character in the life and death of Jesus Christ. We are immensely grateful to him for offering to us this great gift of his talent, creativity, and love.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, especially what we call the Triduum ("Three Days") - which extends from sunset on Maundy Thursday to sunset on Easter Day. These are the holiest days of the Christian year and are not to be missed. The pews should be full on these most holy of days that commemorate the last days of our Lord, his disgraceful and unjust death by us sinful humans, before the great and astounding response by God to that horrendous deed.

Here is a preview of what Holy Week will look like. I urge you strongly to attend these services and to observe these sacred days with pray, meditation, and special times of devotion.

Next Thursday we will commemorate our Lord's institution of the Eucharist, and then we will, as a preview of Jesus' betrayal by his people, strip our own altar of any signs of our Savior. Then on Friday, we will remember his passion and death, with a solemn service at noon (the very time of his crucifixion) and a more pensive service set to music by Satish Casie Chetty and Howard Helvey at 7:00 pm. Then, on Saturday we keep quiet vigil, watching and waiting-waiting for the promise of life. It will come, but some things must happen first.

"Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen. "

A lmighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
