Dear Belmont-Redwood Shores Community,

Some of you may have seen reports of an incident at the Big 5 Sporting Goods store in San Mateo this past Friday (see Mercury News article). An individual described as a transient white male expressed an interest in buying a firearm to "shoot up a school." Note that the witnesses to the incident did not consider the individual's statements to be credible. Additionally, the San Mateo-Foster City School District has been working closely with the San Mateo Police, and they have determined that the individual poses "no impending threat to the schools." Out of an abundance of caution, the San Mateo-Foster City schools are on a state of "heightened awareness", keeping their doors and gates locked, but otherwise going through with their normal school schedule. We have been in touch with local law enforcement, and they are providing an increased presence near our schools, particularly at Central and Nesbit, which have greater physical proximity to the San Mateo Big 5 on South El Camino Real. Based upon the information that we have and our communications with law enforcement, we do not plan to alter our activities at school.

You are welcome to email me directly with any questions you may have. Thank you for your support.
