I apologize. This newsletter should've been sent to you a few weeks ago. It was waiting on me. Since last month, it appears that most attempts at the routine, everyday simple tasks are a struggle. Even as much as I enjoy the opportunity to share my heart through writing, it has been a labor to find words, or even the motivation to compose them into something worth your time to read.

A few weeks ago, at the National PTA Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., every state president took an opportunity to share in our grief, our sorrow and our determination. We are, by no means, the only state to experience the unexpected this year. I sat next to leaders from Puerto Rico, California, Texas and New York, each dealing with their own devastations and losses this year, whether due to natural or man-made disasters. We bonded together as we remembered those who have lost so much, whether it was their possessions, their homes or their loved ones. It's not the connection we had expected to make, but our shared experiences have created a unique common thread that will fasten us together for years to come. Loss is that thread.

This past weekend, I marched with thousands who didn't know me. They did not know my title, my experiences or my tribe. They did not know how close this story was to me, just how much it has impacted my day-to-day life and turned my last few months as president in a direction I could not have anticipated. Everyone there had their own title, their own experience and their own tribe. Maybe they had lost a child to gun violence. Maybe they had been working tirelessly for years to fight for better solutions. Maybe they were a teacher who now felt a moment of dread each day, by just pulling into the parking lot at their school. Maybe they were a student who panicked last week when the fire alarm sounded. Maybe they were a grandmother, or a veteran, or a lawmaker, or a new father. Regardless of their title, we were all there for one reason, connected by one common thread: to shout at whomever would listen that we can lose no more. Not one more. Not one more.

As I marched, I held in my hand the funeral cards from a few of the services I attended last month in Broward County. I frequently looked down at Peter, Nick, Aaron and Chris. I will not allow myself to forget Peter's funeral, the sight of a 15-year-old child, in full ROTC uniform, guarded by his fellow classmates at each end of his casket. Whatever opinions I held the morning of February 14th, they are forever changed. Whatever goals I had that morning are forever altered. Whatever plans I had are forever amended.

After yesterday, my faith has been renewed and my resolve has been re-ignited. The spark that had become an ember in a resting fire has now returned to a blazing flame that will not be extinguished by a little rain. We all know that natural disasters cannot be prevented. We will always prepare, experience and recover from storms, floods and fires. What can be prevented is the loss of another child, teacher or student. While reaching common ground on what methods will achieve this may be challenging, the conversation cannot stop. The goal cannot be lost. We must continue to speak for those who no longer have a voice. We must continue to look for those commonalities and strive for solutions. We must continue to fight for the lives of ALL children.

Thank you so much for your patience and forgiveness.

Do You Know A Hero?
Do you know someone in your school or county that has been a hero to their community?  Have they given of their time to help provide food, clothing or shelter to those in need?  Do they reach beyond the walls of the school and look for ways that they can give back?

If the answer is YES, please send me their story!  I'd like to recognize a few of our HEROES during this year's Leadership Convention.  Feel free to include pics!

If you submit their information as a surprise to them, please let me know that in your email.  I look forward to reading some incredible stories!!

 Leadership Convention - July 12-15, 2018
Registration is now OPEN!
BUT IT'S SUMMER?!

It's true we follow the school calendar and love having our summers free. But, like our teachers, we need to prepare and plan for our students when they return in the fall. Some of you will be new officers and wondering where the manuals are to do this job (and we have them). Truly, we do not expect you to have ESP, maybe just superpowers. We will go you one better: actual classes and small roundtable sessions to answer questions or give you procedures to do your job. This is already a lot to read, so here is our amazing offer to you:
  •  Learn Non-Profit Rules (Do's and Don'ts)
  • PTA Procedure - for almost everything
  • "How to" classes for: Presidents, Treasurers, Secretaries, Advocacy, Fundraising, etc.
  • How to conduct meetings and Robert's Rules
  • Do you need help with programs or fundraising?
  • How to advocate or speak to legislators
We are offering you a crazy amount of information and training for three days at the low early-bird price of  $85.00 . I have been attending these trainings for over a dozen years and trust me, things change and you may need to be updated on the latest processes. Now that that part is covered, let me add this part: make friends, fun, food, and time in a different city. We have receptions, snacks, meals, and other events added to the educational piece. See you in July; bring your best ideas or mind-blowing questions.

 Welcome and Welcome Back!
 Leadership

Succession planning is a process for identifying and developing new leaders who can replace old leaders when they leave_ retire or die. Succession planning increases the availability of experienced and capable employees that are prepared to assume these roles as they become available.

Happy March!

Since this is the time of year for nominations and elections, let's take a minute and talk about succession planning. Many times people ask can PTA's even succession plan when it is the nominating committee that prepares the slate. The answer is a resounding YES...when done properly. Now let us review a proper way to successfully succession plan. In PTA we encourage inclusive leadership. This allows for multiple people to be involved in many roles learning the PTA way along their path. By leading with teaching and molding in mind we effectively set our team up for success. Now this can also have an adverse effect as then a person could feel "they are next". Remember, while leading and teaching to not single any one person out. Set your knowledge free to engage and empower all leaders. This prepares your local unit or county council to have a multitude of prepared leaders for the longevity and sustainability of the association. This will ultimately set your nominating committee up for success. They will have a plethora of candidates to review and select from to prepare the most effective slate possible.

You might ask yourself how does this relate to succession planning when we are not actually selecting the person to come after us? Well remember, the job of the leader is to lead, mold and grow potential leaders, the selection process is the job of the nominating committee and ultimately the members. Each helps the other in the long run and this in turn benefits ALL CHILDREN.

Remember we are here for you when you need us!

 Student Involvement Committee
Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with our fellow PTSA at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School. We offer our assistance as the Student Involvement Committee and will be here if they or anyone else needs our help.

As we talk about Student Involvement, we remember that it includes all students: Music, Arts, ROTC, Academics, Sports, Foreign Language, and anything else that students find interest in. This makes our schools unique, interesting, and a valued place for education. When our students look into their future middle school, high school, and beyond, these interests turn into their passions.

The Student Involvement Committee has been hard at work to get students involved in PTA. This year we are offering a student reduced rate for students 19 and younger for Leadership Convention. You will learn more about certain topics. We also want students to take classes that THEY want to take to see what their future may hold. Once registration opens we are challenging the County Councils to see what county will send the most students. Those students will attend classes and enjoy the convention as a participant. Stay tuned for more details!

So students, COME ONE COME ALL TO LEADERSHIP/CONVENTION  and learn and see what your future holds! Don't forget your voices count! Follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and SNAPchat as well. We will provide more information shortly.
