3rd Graders Take Inaugural Trek to San Diego
Traveling on the bus with your classmates is always fun, but traveling by train is even better! That's exactly what 3rd graders did last Friday as they embarked on an all-day adventure to the beautiful city and coast of San Diego.

Our first stop was at the Maritime Museum, where we were able to step aboard the Star of India and the USS Dolphin submarine. During our guided tour, we learned that the Star of India is the world's oldest active ship, and the USS Dolphin holds the world record for the deepest dive.

From the ocean, we traveled inland to Balboa Park, where we entered the one-of-a-kind I-Max theatre at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. On the dome screen, we enjoyed a 360-degree tour of lemurs in Madagascar. The gigantic dome brought these amazing creatures to life.

Upon leaving the I-Max theatre, we entered the science center, where we could experience hands-on science activities. We ended our day with a relaxing train ride back to the Anaheim ARTIC Train Station. It was a busy day, but the smiles on all of the faces made it all worthwhile!

Fairmont Prep Students Skype with Author of Class Textbook
A unique goal of AP English Language classes at Fairmont Prep is an intensive study of rhetoric and argumentation. Students examine a wide variety of texts, including those emerging in current headlines, to decipher the tricks of persuasion's trade.

On Monday, March 19, Mrs. Silver's classes were treated to a Skype conversation with Jay Heinrichs, the author of their textbook, Thank You for Arguing. Having the chance to personally ask questions and pose argument scenarios to Mr. Heinrichs was an unforgettable experience.

"I had the amazing opportunity to speak to a very witty and knowledgeable writer," one student observed. "Having something like this organized definitely helped with using our limited time wisely, and I could absorb as much information as possible. Talking to an author about [his] book really opens up the language that the writing was created with, and personally, I was able to understand more of Thank You for Arguing in the perspective of Mr. Heinrichs. I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to be introduced to Mr. Heinrichs and to have some of my questions answered, and he has now gained a fanboy."

Many thanks to Mr. Heinrichs for spending his time and sharing his stories with our students. Our research and writing in AP English Language are rhetorically flourishing!
