4th Grade Visits State Capital
Last week, our 4th grade students took their annual trip to Sacramento. Students visited historic landmarks in California history, such as the California State Capitol, Sutter's Fort and Mill, the California State Railroad Museum, and an old schoolhouse. All students even had the opportunity to pan for gold where it was first discovered in California. Even though their prospecting only resulted in a few gold flakes, they struck it rich making memories with friends and enhancing their understanding of California history.

Spring Break
Spring break for students begins tomorrow, as the teachers will be at an in-service training, and there is no school the week of April 2 through April 6. We hope that you have an enjoyable week off with your family. School will resume on Monday, April 9.

Penny Wars
The Fairmont Parent Association will hold its annual community outreach to benefit the Anaheim Police K-9 Association by sponsoring Penny Wars. Penny Wars will kick off on Wednesday, April 11, and will conclude on Wednesday, April 25. The class that fills up its jar most quickly will win a treat from the FPA. Additionally, the class that brings in the most pennies and raises the most money will win a treat. Remember, only pennies count positively in your child's classroom jar. All other money denominations will count negatively. Just a hint: Put that money into a rival classroom's jar. Heehee! :)

2nd and 3rd Grade Field Trips
The 2nd and 3rd grade students will visit the Environmental Nature Center when we return from spring break. On Thursday, April 12, our 3rd grade students will "travel back in time to learn about the tools, trade, and customs of the Tongva and Acjachemen people of Orange County." On Friday, our 2nd grade students will become eco-observers and learn about biodiversity. Please make sure to complete the appropriate 2nd grade or 3rd grade permission slip if your child will attend the trip.

Fairmont Prep Students Have Eye-Opening Experience at Wondercon
On Friday, March 23, Fairmont Film and Visual Arts students journeyed the Anaheim Convention Center for Wondercon, a three-day celebration of film, animation, comics, games, and pop culture.

Students were able to attend panels that featured members and casts of the film and television industries and learned valuable insights into the production process of films and television shows, such as Star Wars, Jurassic Park, The 100, and Marvel's Cloak and Dagger. For example, students attending a panel about animation and special effects were able to meet and ask questions of visual artist John Van Vilet, who worked on movies including Star Wars, Tron, Indiana Jones, and X-Men.

"It truly made me feel more secure about going into the film industry because [I learned] that you don't have to be famous to be perfectly happy and make a good living, and that make me really excited," Fairmont Prep junior Amanda Dalby said.

Students also walked around the exhibit hall floor, which featured toys, games, posters, merchandise, and art centered around pop culture. Most students' favorite part of the floor was Artist's Alley, where many professional and semi-professional artists displayed their talents and served as inspirations for art and film students alike.

Overall, the convention was a valuable experience that opened many students' eyes to the staggering impact that art and film have on society.

"I would say that I left Wondercon with a much greater understanding of film culture," junior Reid Bobrownicki said. "I have also now seen how strongly films or other things can become woven into who a person is."
