Synergize

The energy and excitement in the Joseph Becker Gymnasium at Roycemore last Friday night couldn’t have been much higher as the students performed for parents and guests their demonstrations of athletics, dance and tumbling during the 101st annual Palio. The concept of Palio in Siena, Italy, is that different contrada— what we would call districts or wards— compete for the honor of winning the Palio— which is a unique white banner that represents special effort and success. At Roycemore we also have our Palio Banner. From the beginning of the year all students have been encouraged to perfect their skills, to listen attentively to their teachers, and to cooperate with their classmates.

In order for Palio to be successful, it requires our students to demonstrate the 6th Habit of Highly Effective People— Synergize. Synergy is when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. When people work collaboratively they must value and respect their differences, and recognize how to build on the strengths of a group member or to compensate for another member’s weakness in order to end up with a result that is better for the combined efforts of several than one could do one one’s own. As we saw on Friday night, there were some participants in the tumbling routines who leapt off the springboard to fly through the air, while others had to balance on the legs of their classmates so that the student flying through the air could pass through their arms and legs. Each participant had an important role to play, whether doing flips, positioning the mats or holding a banner. Just one of those feats would not have been nearly as impressive and awe-inspiring as the combined effort of the group. In order to achieve what the students did, however, it took a lot of guidance, practice, a sense of adventure, and trust of their classmates. The synergy that resulted, however, created great excitement and energy, transforming the gymnasium into something akin to attending a Circque du Soleil performance!

Palio is just one of the opportunities for our students to learn the power of synergy. Daily classroom activities and projects allow our students to learn authentically that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Roycemore Alum Spotlight — Dr. Terry Gdoutos '05

Dr. Terry Gdoutos is a Research Scientist in Aerospace at the California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena, CA, where he designs, analyzes, and develops structural systems for lightweight spacecraft, designed to beam solar energy to Earth, providing limitless power to the planet. After graduating from Roycemore in 2005, he studied Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science at Northwestern University, earning two BS degrees, and subsequently obtained his PhD in Aeronautics from Caltech.

When I remember my years at Roycemore, it is clear to me that Roycemore’s culture of excellence and individuality has positively shaped my life since graduation. Roycemore emphasized learning through discovery, critical thinking, and challenging oneself; values that have remained with me to this day. Outside the classroom, the opportunities to build friendships through the extracurricular activities offered also shaped my character and proved to be invaluable, particularly through soccer, baseball (which I had never played before), and scholastic bowl. Through my January Short Term projects, I learned and was inspired by the logic behind how computers operate, and went on to study Computer Science in college. I still remember how I learned to critically analyze film on another JST project. Roycemore provided me with a truly unique experience.

I was recently very excited to learn that Roycemore extended JST to Middle School through the P3 program. I was even more impressed when I experienced first-hand, as a mentor to a P3 student group, the inspiration of students to discover and research new fields; not only did students understand the basics of wing design, but also developed the intuition to propose novel solutions for performance improvement! I am excited and proud to experience firsthand how Roycemore is building on the programs that shaped my life as a student.
