The National Center for Family & Marriage Research (NCFMR) was established in 2007 to help improve our understanding of how family structure is linked to the health and well-being of children, adults, families, and communities and to inform policy development and programmatic responses.

A Decade of Change in the U.S. Remarriage Rate
Although half of marriages in the U.S. end in divorce, divorced men and women are remarrying less than in the past. Using the 2008 and 2018 American Community Survey (ACS), we examine changes in the remarriage rate (defined as the number of marriages per 1,000 divorced or widowed individuals) over the past ten years. From 2008 to 2018, the remarriage rate decreased by 7 percentage points. However, the magnitude of this decline varied by gender. The fall in remarriage rate was almost twice as large for men (12 percentage points) than women (5 percentage points). Even so, the remarriage rate remained higher for men than women in 2018. To learn more about how remarriage has changed over the past decade, visit our new profile Ten Years of Change in Remarriage (FP-20-20).

Note: This profile estimates remarriage rates based on adults (18 and older) at risk of remarriage in the past 12 months. Men and women at risk are divorced or widowed.
