AAOS 2018 Recap: C ompanies are responding differently to the challenge of creating products that correlate to better patient outcomes and quicker, less expensive procedures. (Our preliminary estimation: the industry grew +3.7% in 2017 vs. 2016.) In announcing 2017 revenue, most companies included 2018 guidance and strategies to support growth in this year and beyond.

The purchase fills a portfolio gap, as Orthofix gains access to the M6-C and M6-L cervical and lumbar artificial discs to treat degenerative disease, currently CE Marked in the EU. The transaction is slated to close in 2Q18. FDA approval for M6-C could come by mid-2019.
 
SafeOp's technology provides information about the health and safety of nerves during retraction, and is designed to work without an additional professional in the O.R. for most procedures. Alphatec expects to introduce SafeOp services to the spine market in early 2019.
 
The pilot program will provide a Geisinger Health Plan member with lifetime coverage for future surgical care and costs following total hip replacement--including hospital care and device replacement for future revisions--while the patient remains with the Geisinger Health Plan and is treated by Geisinger providers.
 
Hospital for Special Surgery will help develop the system to address treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis patients or young patients with congenital dysplastic hip.
