Dear Certified Mental Performance Consultants (CMPCs), CMPC applicants, and AASP members:

The Certification Council is pleased to announce that the AASP certification exam for Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) status is open at Pearson VUE test sites.

Exam Description and Preparation

1. The CMPC exam is 115 multiple choice items. The exam is delivered via computer-based testing at Pearson VUE test sites. Candidates have 90 minutes to complete the exam.

2. Candidates should read pp. 16-30 in the Candidate Handbook under the Certification tab on the AASP website. These pages describe the content domains developed in the Job Task Analysis that represent topics covered by the exam. On pp. 28-30, a reference list is provided which may be helpful in preparing for the exam. CMPC exam preparation materials are currently being developed by AASP and Human Kinetics as an interactive web text, complete with content, video, check-in exercises, quizzes and a practice exam. We expect this resource to be available in the Fall of 2019.

Scheduling Your Exam

1. You will need a coupon code from the AASP Business Office to schedule your exam with Pearson VUE.

If you are a CMPC APPLICANT  who has been approved by the Certification Council as fulfilling all required coursework and mentored experiences, you will soon be receiving a coupon code from Stephanie Lander, AASP Certification Manager ([email protected]), with which to schedule your exam. You have already paid the CMPC application fee of $375, which includes the exam sitting fee. You must take the exam within six months of receiving your coupon code.

If you are a current CMPC  who is taking the exam as part of recertification:

a. Go to www.appliedsportpsych.org/payment and select CMPC Recertification Fee (with exam) - $275. If you are in the late period (Dec. 1-31) of your recertification year, select CMPC Recertification Fee - Late (with exam) - $300. Pay the amount prescribed, or you can send a check made out to AASP accompanied by a note explaining what the payment is for to Certification Council, AASP, 8365 Keystone Crossing, Suite 107, Indianapolis, IN 46240.

b. Send an email to [email protected] with the subject line "Certification Exam Request (include First Initial and Last Name)" and indicate that you are a current CMPC and are requesting to take the exam. The office will verify that you are a CMPC in good standing and that your payment has been received and reply back with a coupon code to take the exam.

c. Your payment covers the exam sitting fee as well as your recertification fee. Your payment is noted in your file so that those CMPCs taking the exam ahead of their recertification year will have already paid in full prior to sending in their recertification application.

d. Current CMPCs must pass the exam PRIOR TO submitting their recertification application, with the exception of 2017 and 2018 recertification applicants who have been given a grace period to take the exam until April 2019. However, recertification applications must still be submitted during the September 1 - November 30, 2018 period.

2. When you have your exam coupon code, you can schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE testing center. Go to www.appliedsportpsych.org/certification/exam where you will see a description of the CMPC exam. Under "Scheduling an Exam" click on the hyperlink to www.pearsonvue.com/acsm. This will take you to the Pearson VUE Certification Testing site of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Candidates must follow the ACSM registration process to complete a candidate profile. Candidates will be assigned an ACSM Candidate ID which will be used to complete their exam scheduling. The ACSM Candidate ID will be used whenever scheduling, rescheduling or cancelling an appointment with Pearson VUE.  AASP is partnering with ACSM to offer the CMPC exam.

3. Once on the ACSM Certification Testing site after creating your ACSM Candidate ID, click on "Find a test center" in the right column. This will allow you to identify a Pearson VUE test center near you.

4. Once you've identified nearby test centers, return to the Pearson VUE ACSM Certification Testing page ( www.pearsonvue.com/acsm). Click on "View exams" in the right column. Scroll down and click on "AASP Certified Mental Performance Consultant." You will be able to schedule your exam on this site using the coupon code provided by AASP.

Taking the Exam

1. You must follow all the stringent Pearson VUE rules to take the exam at their sites. This is explained on pp. 31-33 of the Candidate Handbook as well as on the scheduling page of the Pearson VUE Certification Testing site for ACSM (click "View Testing Policies").

2. Some examples of Pearson VUE rules:
    • two forms of valid identification, one of which includes a photograph and signature
    • arrival 15 minutes prior to appointment time
    • no materials/possessions/children at all in the testing room, including purses, cell phones, wallets, and watches
    • you will be observed at all times during testing
    • no refunds for cancellations or reschedules received less than 24 hours in advance
After the Exam

1. Score reports will be issued to candidates within six weeks of the test date. Score reports will include a "pass" or "fail" result. Failing candidates will receive their test score and information on their performance in each content domain area.

2. A criterion-referenced standard-setting process was used to establish the passing score for the exam. The passing score is established to identify individuals with an acceptable level of knowledge and skill.

3. Please take the time to complete the post-exam evaluation form that will be sent to you via email once you have completed the exam. The Certification Council will use this information to improve the exam and procedures related to taking the exam.

4. Candidates who fail the exam may retest after a 90-day waiting period following the date the previous exam was taken. The retest fee for new CMPC candidates is $275, and is $200 for current CMPCs pursuing recertification.

Waiting Period for Exam Development Participants

1. If you reviewed exam items (i.e., item reviewer or passing score Subject Matter Expert), or if you are a current member of the Certification Council, you will not be allowed to take this first version of the CMPC exam.

2. The AASP Certification Manager has a listing of participants involved in the exam development process and will withhold coupon codes from individuals who reviewed exam items.

3. If you reviewed exam items and are unclear as to when you are eligible to take the exam, please contact Dr. Betsy Shoenfelt at [email protected] for clarification.
