Rector's Reflections

Move In Day

As a former university dean and professor I recall the cadence of the perennial move-in day on or near college campuses. Legions of parents descend with carloads that include tiny refrigerators, Ikea furniture, electronics, area rugs, and posters. They unload the one they have birthed, raised, nursed, instructed, and reproved for eighteen or so, to prepare him or her for independence. Then, just like that, the parents are gone, perhaps wiping away tears. Perhaps their final words were ones they hoped would stick. "Study well." "Make good choices." "Watch your time." "Don't stay up too late." But in every parental heart is a simple prayer: "O God, be with them."

In the final portion of Jesus' great prayer for the disciples (John 17:6-19), he entreats the Father to love and protect the disciples as a parent who knows their time for direct supervision is coming to an end. In this preparation we hear his pleading like a loving parent who wants the best for the ones he has sheltered, taught, loved, reproved, and sent. Jesus begs for God to hold them in the truth that is to do as they have been taught, to follow the model established for them. Jesus asked for the disciples to be protected and surrounded so that they may not be lost. He prays for the disciples to have their joy completed, and to live what they have seen and understood from their rabbi. [Sundays and Seasons, 2018]

May we, like all those college students and the disciples, make good choices-living in the truth of the gospel, love as we have been loved, have our joy complete, and, above all, know that God is with us-always, no matter what!

He is Risen Indeed. Alleluia!

Memorial Service for Amy Dowd
A memorial service for Amy Dowd, Carolyn Sundquist's daughter, will be held here at All Saints on Saturday May 19, 1 to 2 PM. Please continue to keep the family in prayer.

Almighty God, Father of mercies and giver of comfort: Deal graciously, we pray, with all who mourn Amy; that, casting all their care on you, they may know the consolation of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The All Saints Community and Refugees

Three Students

Chance's Family

Over the last 18 months, the All Saints community expanded its efforts to support those displaced from their homes owing to war and violence with a special emphasis on those migrating to New Hampshire. Working with the International Institute of New England (IINE), which is the non-profit agency designated by the State Department to help settle official refugees in Manchester, our community has been generous in helping to supply household goods, used computers, clothing, food, appliances, and some furniture to refugee families in need.

Amadou Hamady, the former program director for IINE and now the lead social worker in the Manchester School District supporting immigrants and non-native English speakers across the District, has been bringing to All Saints groups of migrants representing a wide range of families who have recently arrived in the US. These visits have not only given us a chance to meet some of the folks whom we have been supporting, but also for them to feel the warmth and to witness in-person the generosity of our community.

On Sunday April 22, Amadou brought high school students representing three large families who lived for decades in refugee camps in Africa until less than a years ago when they were given the chance to come to New Hampshire. All three of the girls are on the honor role of their high school, despite being part of large needy families (e.g., none have not been able to afford to go to a Walmart). They were thrilled with the warm reception that they received and were overwhelmed with the generous gifts of hygiene kits, of clothes from Lord & Tailor, and of goods from the Food Pantry. The pictures show the three girls in front of one of the two cars by the Outreach Building loaded with the gifts that they were given and and some of the brothers and sisters of one of the girls outside of their apartment in Manchester.

Thanks to all of you for your generous support of these new Americans! We are working with Amadou and others to set up a simple email system to identify specific needs of immigrant students and their families in Manchester and share them with those, such as us, who may be able to help. We'll let you know when we have been able to get it set up. Amadou will come to pick up items that do not sell at the Summer Fair and hopes to bring a bus full of immigrants to Circus Smirkus. In the meantime, if you have a used computer (laptop or flat screen desktop) or special items to donate to immigrant families please let Warren Muir (wrmuir@gmail.com 202-495-1128) or Joanne Crowe (for computers) (Joannecrowe317@gmail.com 603-930-2607) know.

Ending Hunger, Enriching Lives
(3rd)

A staggering 49 million in America, including 1 in 5 children, are food-insecure. To support those who are hungry in our area, Wolfeboro Serves, the interfaith community service oriented youth group collaboration of All Saints Episcopal Church, Brewster Academy, and First Congregational Church UCC Wolfeboro is sponsoring a food packaging event on May 20, 2018. Partnering with The Outreach Program's Ending Hunger New England team, Wolfeboro Serves will package meals that will be distributed locally through L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry. For every dollar raised* a family of 4 will be fed a meal of macaroni and cheese or pasta with tomato and basil sauce.

*Donations may be directed through any Wolfeboro Serves youth or checks dropped off to either church office with "Ending Hunger" on the memo line.

Circus Smirkus Homestays
(corrected email below, 4th)
As you know by now - The circus is coming to town this summer! As head of the Homestay Committee, I am looking for parishioners to host young circus troupers in their homes, two per house. The kids will arrive Saturday, August 11 and leave Monday, August 13. So, they would be in your home for three nights. Most of their stay they will be busy with the circus. As a host, you will feed them two meals a day, drop them at The Nick in the morning and pick them up in the evening. You do not need to have children or grandchildren in your home in order to host the circus troupers. Past hosts in other towns have found the experience to be quite delightful. Please consider hosting. A sign-up sheet is on the parish hall bulletin board. If you have any questions, please contact Sarah Day at sarahday66@hotmail.com or 515-1889.
NOTE: Background checks will be required for host families.
