January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month.  The theme for 202 0 is "Best for You. Best for Baby."  Not all birth defects can be prevented but women can take certain steps to increase their chances of having a healthy baby by being their healthiest self both before and during pregnancy.  What is best for mom is also best for baby.

Check out the following images showing steps women can take to increase their chances of having a healthy baby.

Preventing Infections During Pregnancy

There are simple steps a woman can take to protect her fetus or newborn from infections that have the potential to cause serious health problems.  The following are a list of those infections:

Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
A pregnant woman infected with CMV can pass the virus to her baby during pregnancy.  About one out of every 200 babies is born with congenital CMV infection.  However, only about one in five babies with congenital CMV infection will be sick from the virus or have long-term health problems.

If a woman is pregnant they should know about group B strep (GBS).  About 1 in 4 pregnant women in the United States carry the bacteria that cause GBS disease.  Babies can get very sick and even die if their mothers pass GBS to them during childbirth.  Every pregnant woman should be tested for GBS prior to delivery.  If the test is positive, the pregnant woman will receive an antibiotic during labor to prevent the bacteria from spreading to the baby.
Listeriosis is a rare but serious infection caused by eating food contaminated with bacteria called Listeria.  Listeriosis mostly affects pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.  Pregnant women are 10 times more likely than other people to contract listeriosis.

Zika virus can be passed from a pregnant woman to her developing baby during pregnancy.  Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause a birth defect called microcephaly and other severe fetal brain defects.  Zika often spreads through infected Aedes mosuitoes.  You can also get Zika through unprotected sex (without the use of condom) with someone who has been infected with the Zika virus, even if they do not show any symptoms.

The Healthy Start Team
From the Director
G reetings,

It's the year 2020 - a leap year, the 20th year of the 3rd millennium, the 20th year of the 21st century, the start of another decade and I'm hopeful it's going to be a great year for Healthy Start!

The legislative session starts early this year on Tuesday, January 20th with Children's Week kicking off on Sunday, January 26th at the Capitol Rotunda.  So far, it looks as though Healthy Start funding should remain the same this fiscal year (Healthy Start funding remained the same in the Governor's budget that was released to the public on November 18, 2019).  Our legislative visits have been very positive thus far and we're hopeful we'll avoid any surprises this legislative session.

Cheers to another year of helping our youngest population in Florida have a Healthy Start in life!

Happy New Year!
