The week ahead is a special one for our community as we turn into the last two full school weeks of the school year. Starting Tuesday evening, we kick off a string of three spectacular evening events beginning with the 2018 spring orchestra concert (please see calendar and flyer below for all event dates/times). Our Knight musicians and our Knight thespians have been working for some time towards their orchestra and band spring concerts as well as their production of Guys and Dolls, Jr. You really owe it to yourself and the family to come on out and take in one or more of these performances. I can assure you they will all be excellent and any evening you choose promises to be a terrific family affair!

I would like to extend a tremendous thank you to our PTSA and the local businesses mentioned below for all that they did last week on behalf of our educators during Teacher Appreciation Week. It means a great deal to our teachers and staff when our parents and local businesses step forward and essentially say, "well done" here late in the school year. The support was deeply appreciated and I cannot thank you enough.

You may not be aware of this point in American history, but in 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

If over the course of this week you happen to see our dedicated Orlando Police School Resource Officer on campus or for that matter, any peace officer in uniform, kindly take a moment to thank them for their service. You see, we all count on on them for when real trouble surfaces, they run straight towards it, not the other direction. We are indeed fortunate to have the men and women of law enforcement on the job for all of us.

Happy Mother's Day and I hope to see you this week at one of our spring time evening performances!

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Knight Appreciation of Teachers

Teachers provide so much to our students - inspiration, motivation and, ultimately, their futures. From May 7-11, 2018 we showed our thanks and gratitude by treating them like a V.I.T. - VERY IMPORTANT TEACHER.

Teachers change the lives of millions of children every day, and their work and impact extends far beyond the boundaries of the classroom. PTSA Teacher Appreciation Week has been supporting our LNMS teachers this past week #ThankATeacher for all that they deliver to our nation's children.

We held had an event for lunch everyday sponsored thanks to Chili's, Emilios, 4 Rivers Smokehouse, and our wonderful PTSA (dessert day and breakfast).

The 3-certification bundle ( PowerPoint, Word, and Excel) provides excellent opportunities towards resume building and scholarships as well as high school and college credit! Students will receive certificates and "certified" T-shirts!

A final Microsoft Office Specialist exam opportunity will be given on Thursday, May 24.

* To inquire about courses ICT1, ICT2, and DIT, for grades 6-8 respectively, please contact Mrs. Ward (teacher) at [email protected]

Attention Incoming 7th Grade Parents

Please be advised ALL students entering the 7th grade are REQUIRED to have the Tetanus diphtheria (Tdap) shot before entering school per Orange County Health Dept. Please bring proof of immunization ASAP because your child will not receive a schedule if they do not have their shots.

Knight Champions
2018 TRACK & FIELD DISTRICT CHAMPIONS!

In case you haven't already heard, it's great to be a Knight!

Our Lady Knights track & field team placed second in the county and our gentlemen placed seventh. These scores combined earned us FIRST PLACE IN THE COUNTY!

May 8th Highlights
Tuesday, May 8th  was the first night of field events for Track & Field County Championships and it was a success for our Knights! Zane Durant threw 47 feet 9 inches; which is his furthest throw of the season and earned us first place for the boys shot put. Anaya Brown jumped her personal best 16 feet, on her last jump to seal first place for the girls long jump! This is Brown's second consecutive year claiming first place in the long jump and Durant's second county appearance.

May 9th Highlights
The second night of Track and Field Championships was a fun filled evening at Dr. Phillips High School. The first race was the 100m and Anaya Brown started us off on another good note, placing first. She ran her race in just 12.47. Our girls 4x100 relay team broke another school record at 51.66 and placed first overall in their event. The young ladies on this relay team are: Anisa Palma, Arianna Slater, Anaya Brown and Kysri Burton. Brown came back and scored big for the Knights, claiming first place once again in the 200m, running it in 25.91. This makes it the third time that Brown breaks the 200m school record. Brown was the only athlete to compete in four events for Track County Championships and earn first place in every event she competed in! Our last runners to compete in Track Fest and earn us points for placing seventh, were our 4x400 relay team: Angelina Scott, Valerie Hoyos, Valeria Pestana, and Kamyla Vega.

Zachary Jones came in fifth place for our boys and broke his personal record once again in the mile, running it in 5:03.67. Our boys 4x400 team also earned us points at Track Fest getting seventh place overall: Ashton Marotta, Jack Walker, Zachary Jones, and Stephen Marrero.

Congratulations to our track teams and coaches! Thank you for your continued hard work and making our track program the number in the county!

~ Irimar Hernandez, Athletic Director/Physical Education

In Celebration of Principal Alisa N. Dorsett
OCPS - Carver Middle School, Orlando, Florida

Earlier last week (which also happened to be Teacher Appreciation Week across the United States), OCPS lost one of its very special principals, Ms. Alisa Dorsett. At the time of her sudden passing, Ms. Dorsett was serving as the principal of Carver Middle School in downtown Orlando with an enrollment of about 830 students. This was her very first year as a K-12 principal having arrived as a former assistant principal for Dr. Phillips High School. Brought in as a "game changer," she was implementing some very progressive educational programs for Carver Middle School and her school community.

It is very difficult to find professionals of Ms. Dorsett's caliber to lead our American K-12 schools in the 21st century and she was doing a marvelous job. These principalships are tough positions that don't fit nicely into a traditional 40-hour work week. Not only OCPS, but the state of Florida, has lost a fine educational leader.

Florida flag

Ms. Dorsett will be missed by her entire school community, but most sadly by eight hundred-thirty 12-14 year-old children who looked up to their principal - her Carver Bears - youngsters she was working so hard for, seven days a week.

~ Mark Hunter (worked for Ms. Dorsett on her "Carver Community Brief" each Monday)
