We are excited to announce that the Hope Babette Tang Humanism in Healthcare Essay Contest has expanded to include nursing students, thanks to a collaboration with the AACN (American Association Colleges of Nursing) and AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges). This year's prompt for medical and nursing students: Reflecting on the following quote, tell us about a healthcare experience with a patient or fellow clinician that led you to a new, unexpected understanding or perspective: “It’s not what you look at that matters, but what you see" — Henry David Thoreau. The winning essays will be published in both Academic Medicine and The Journal of Professional Nursing. For more information and to submit essays please click here.

More than 85 institutions put a special emphasis on patients during the 2018 Solidarity Week for Compassionate Patient Care, which was held Feb. 12-16. Activities included pet therapy sessions, care kits for families who had a stillborn or premature baby, the Tell Me More® program, and much more. Thank you to all the GHHS chapters and healthcare institutions that participated!
The Gold Humanism Honor Society hosted its first Thank a Resident Day on February 23, 2018, a day set aside to honor residents across the country for their hard work and dedication. More than 30 medical institutions planned activities to show their appreciation for residents, including special meals and thank you notes. Thank you to all the GHHS chapters and healthcare institutions that made this first year a success!

The Gold Student Summer Fellowship offers medical students the opportunity to create their own service or research project. Projects must be focused on understanding and/or enhancing culturally competent practice, developing skills to become patient and relationship-centered physicians, and addressing a public health need in an underserved community or population.
