- Pete Souza, White House photographer for Presidents Obama and Reagan, will give a lecture and presentation at 7 p.m. at the Lied Center. Free and open to the public. Read the news release.

Associate Professor Carol Holstead was quoted in the March 12 issue of The Wall Street Journal in a story (p. A8) about professors banning laptops and requiring students to take notes longhand. The reporter identified Holstead as a source because of a story she wrote in 2015 about banning laptops, "The Benefits No-Tech Note Taking," which appeared in T
he Chronicle of Higher Education.
Nominations for the John Katich Award for Creativity are due to the dean's office by Monday, April 16. The Katich award goes to a tenure-track or tenured faculty member who has demonstrated creativity in teaching, research, service or a combination of these areas. The award will be presented at the last faculty meeting of the year on May 4.

IMC program director and faculty member
Matt Tidwell presented his research project, "Strong prior reputation: a help or hindrance in reputational crises?" at the 2018 International Crisis and Risk Communications Conference at the University of Central Florida in Orlando on March 14.
The Diversity and Inclusion Action Group (DIAG) invites the submission of proposals for the 2018-2019 Applied Research Award. The award is open to faculty as well as doctoral candidates. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. April 23. Get the details.

University of Kansas journalism students won three events in the television category and two events in the radio category at the 2018 Kansas Association of Broadcasters competition. The first-place recipients will receive their awards on April 3 at Kansas State University.
Top finishers for KU in TV were:

The Tom Murphy Fellowship is designed to develop and enrich a recent KU graduate interested in pursuing a career in sports and entertainment marketing. This competitive position provides the opportunity to work at Octagon, a leading global marketing agency, and learn from top experts in the field. The candidate will work closely with a variety of divisions, including creative, research, media rights and sponsorship consulting to learn about the intricacies of sports and entertainment marketing. The six-month fellowship in Chicago runs from June 15 to Dec. 31, 2018, and pays $2,700 a month. Deadline is April 13. Learn more here.

Area recruiter to host information booth on Wednesday
Audrey Lombardo, senior recruitment manager at Division-D, will host an information booth from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 28, in the Clarkson Gallery, sharing internship and job opportunities.

Scholarships and contests

The School of Journalism is holding its first-ever competition for students to submit photos and videos representing the subject "Diversity and You." Entrants have a wide latitude to express their views of diversity as it affects them and others. Awards will be offered in each category: $400 for first place, $200 for second place, and $100 for third place. Learn more here.
The Kansas Association of Broadcasters will award up to $2,000 in individual scholarships to next semester's juniors and seniors. Application

Students are invited to participate in a focus groups for Core Spaces, an apartment complex seeking research information about the Lawrence market.
Ilana Karp, J-School senior, is organizing the focus groups, which are at 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. on March 29 in room 305 at Anschutz Library. Time commitment is 30-45 minutes, and participants will receive free food and a $10 gift card. Questions? Email Karp at

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, in partnership with Park University, is presenting Baseball Book Notes "Double Play," at 10 a.m. April 7 at the museum in Kansas City, Missouri. The program includes historian
James W. Johnson, author of The Black Bruins, chronicling the story of
Jackie Robinson and other teammates for UCLA's football team in the 1940s. The second program includes photographers
Ira Block and
Byron Motley, who each have published collections of photographs from Cuba, featuring baseball and culture.

J.B. Forbes, 1973 graduate, and
Rob Rains, 1978 graduate, were inducted into the St. Louis Media Hall of Fame on March 17.
Forbes is a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He will be a guest panelist at the "Politics and the Media" panel discussion during the William Allen White birthyear celebration on April 25. Rains runs STLSportsPage.com and was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. He has written or co-written more than 30 books, most on baseball.

Former J-School professor dies
David Dary, former KU School of Journalism professor, died March 15 at age 83. Dary graduated from KU with a master's degree in journalism and taught at the school for 20 years. He left in 1989 to become head of the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Oklahoma.
