Frank Vessels Elementary School Wins $20,000 Grant
for Classroom Technology

The Cypress School District is pleased to announce that Frank Vessels Elementary School is the winner of a $20,000 grant from the Scholar Dollars grant program. The school will use the funds to purchase classroom technology to support 21st-century teaching and learning.

"The Scholar Dollars grant will help to enrich our instructional program and prepare our students to be college and career ready," said Principal Helen Lu. Specifically, the $20,000 will provide students with increased access to computers, laptops, and iPads. "In a world where technology is involved in most everything we do, it is our goal to put technology in the hands of every student, in every classroom, every day!"

Sponsored by the ScholarShare Investment Board, which oversees the ScholarShare 529 College Savings Plan, the Scholar Dollars grant program provides K-8 public and charter schools statewide with more than $300,000 to support programs and services that foster a rich, college-going culture. Schools are free to spend the grant monies on a wide variety of needs, including musical instruments, technology, library books, sports equipment, gardening tools, field trips, and more. School grant proposals compete against each other for votes on the ScholarShare Scholar Dollars website.

State Treasurer John Chiang presented grant checks to 11 schools in Southern California at a ceremony held May 11, 2018, on the Vessels campus. In total, 20 schools across the state were awarded in six different categories based on school size. Frank Vessels won first place in Category D, which includes schools with 651 to 900 students.

Cypress School District Superintendent Anne Silavs shared, "We are grateful to the staff at Vessels who spearheaded this effort and to the entire Cypress community for all their support!"
