Success of the Month
In January, the Sustainability Division launched Cool Block, a program designed to empower neighbors over five months to get to know each other, become more disaster-prepared, and live more sustainably. After staff trained 18 “Block Leaders,” the City unfortunately had to put Cool Block largely on hold in March due to COVID-19 safety concerns. But, one team persevered!

They were able to transition their meetings online, overcoming various challenges, and became the first official Cool Block team in Mountain View to complete the program on September 30. The end result: they took a total of 159 actions that reduced their carbon emissions by 44,148 pounds, or an average of 18.3% per household. To acknowledge their achievement, the City presented all team members with certificates signed by the Mayor. And, a second team is on track to complete the program by November 17.

The leader of the first Cool Block team recently wrote an uplifting blog post reflecting on his team’s experience. It demonstrates the power of one person, and small groups, to make a significant difference. Read his blog post here. Congratulations to Neal and his team!
Meet Our New Sustainability Fellow!
Hi Mountain View Sustainability Enthusiasts, my name is Autumn and I'm the new Climate Corps Sustainability Fellow for the City! I'm non-binary and my pronouns are they/them. I'll be doing a lot of community engagement work during my time here, and so I wanted to introduce myself in the newsletter and get to know all you lovely people!

For a bit of background about myself, I grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan (yes, there really is a Kalamazoo!) but went to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo for my undergraduate degree in Environmental Management and Protection. Some of my hobbies include producing music, reading fantasy and sci-fi novels, and hiking. I'm new to the Bay Area, so I'm still figuring things out, but I already know I'll love it here.

I'm super excited to be working with the City, and I look forward to helping further Mountain View's great sustainability goals. Together, we can make a difference!
Voter Resources
The General Election is 5 days away! Have you voted yet? On the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters website, you can check your registration, locate a vote center, find a ballot drop-off location near you, and more.

If you voted by mail, you can track your ballot here. If you are voting by mail but haven’t sent in your ballot yet, consider dropping it off at a local ballot box rather than the Post Office to ensure that it is counted on time.
Have a Green Halloween!
It’s almost Halloween! Here are a few tips for celebrating sustainably:
  • Reuse, borrow, or thrift a costume. Instead of buying a new one this year, try repurposing an old costume, borrowing one from a friend or neighbor, or thrift shopping at local businesses for a new-to-you costume.

  • Make your own treats. Since Halloween will need to be celebrated a little differently this year, consider cutting down on the pre-made and wastefully wrapped candy, and make your own for your Halloween at home! There are plenty of tasty candy recipes online to try out.

  • Compost your pumpkin. After Halloween ends, and your pumpkin is looking a little sad, drop your pumpkin (and your food scraps!) into your compost cart. If you don't have a compost cart, you can register here to drop off your food scraps at the Mountain View Recycling Center. This helps avoid scary methane emissions!

Lights On Silicon Valley
Were you impacted by a Public Safety Power Shutoff this year? SVCE has launched a new program with Sunrun to help customers install solar and battery storage systems to prepare for future power outages. If you choose to enroll in Lights On Silicon Valley, you can get an up-front rebate of $1,250 by agreeing to share some battery energy with the electricity grid during peak times, and only when there isn’t an outage. This rebate is available on top of other rebates and tax credits!

With this program, you get access to backup power, reduce your energy costs, and help our community develop a clean-energy power grid. Win-win-win! Interested participants can sign up for more information here.
