At our next meeting we will screen an extraordinary documentary,
Cooler Bandits
, that is especially appropriate event for the Thanksgiving season. Last year a group of EPIC members, in collaboration with the Heyman Center, became mentors to the formerly incarcerated students now attending Columbia through its
Justice-in-Education
initiative. We weren’t sure how this would work out – I can only say that the program has exceeded all expectations for all involved, and we are happily continuing our role as mentors. One of the men featured in
Cooler Bandits,
Richard Roderick, is now Program Coordinator of the J-I-E. He will join us for discussion after the screening. The film and our mentorship are especially moving to me because we seem to be living in a time when ethical norms, truth, even basic decency, are rare commodities. On Tuesday we can all think about better angels, and the struggle to rebuild formerly disposable lives, and perhaps even ways in which we can help personally. We will have a sandwich buffet.
