Volunteering at the HOYA Clinic, which strives to provide quality health care to underserved populations in the spirit of cura personalis, or care of the whole person, has profoundly impacted the lives of many students, including several in the Class of 2018.

A research project evaluating the effectiveness of an oral health training program, led by Amanda Corwin (M'20), demonstrated the power of the Health Justice Alliance, a partnership between Georgetown University Medical Center and Georgetown University Law Center.

In a 10-minute documentary being shown at national and international film festivals, including at Cannes this month, Georgetown researchers describe how zebrafish provide a biomedical research model that is helping to advance human medicine.

For more than 20 years, Georgetown University Medical Center's Mini Medical School has helped members of the community learn about basic and clinical science topics from School of Medicine faculty members, giving them insights into their own health.

Developing the HPV vaccine was a major step toward decreasing the global burden of cervical cancer. However, as Richard Schlegel, MD, PhD, said at a recent Doctors Speak Out, there is still a lot of work to be done to reduce cervical cancer diagnoses worldwide.

Each fall, seniors majoring in global health conduct field research or intern with NGOs, universities and health ministries in foreign countries as part of the annual Global Health Practical Experience Abroad. 

 




Nasca to Deliver GUSOM Commencement Address
Thomas Nasca, MD, MACP, president and chief executive officer of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and ACGME International, will address the Georgetown University School of Medicine Class of 2018 and receive an honorary doctor of science degree at its commencement ceremony on May 20 at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, DC. 

Mitchell Delivered Commencement Address at OUWB
Stephen Mitchell, MD, MBA, dean for medical education at the School of Medicine, delivered the commencement address at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine Class of 2018 commencement ceremony on May 11 in Rochester, Michigan.

Dybul to Receive Honorary Degree at Fairfield University
The Honorable Mark Dybul, MD (C'85, M'92), a professor of medicine and faculty co-director of the Center for Global Health and Quality at Georgetown University Medical Center, will receive an honorary doctor of science degree during the commencement exercises at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut on May 20.

In partnership with the Council on Diversity Affairs (CODA), Georgetown Women in Medicine (GWIM) launched the Women on the Walls campaign to increase the recognition and visibility of women leaders through portraits. Nominees for portraits do not need to be living, but must have made exceptional contributions in terms of research, education, service and/or clinical care. The Center for Global Health Science and Security at Georgetown University Medical Center announced the launch of the Elizabeth R. Griffin Program, a new research and education program focused on biosafety, biosecurity, and protecting the health and safety of the laboratory and clinical researchers whose work is vital to strengthening global health security.

 




Three Georgetown College seniors studying science, technology, and international affairs, opened an exhibit titled, "Remembering the 1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic at Georgetown." Sponsored by the Global Health Initiative's Great Flu Centenary Project, the exhibit explores the impact of the 1918 Spanish Flu on Georgetown University and beyond.
