C|M|LAW Joins New Cyber Research Alliance

Three academic institutions - Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, Case Western Reserve University and Mercyhurst University - each maintain nationally recognized programs in the science of cybersecurity. Together, they announced plans to share their individual expertise and collectively form the North Coast Cyber Research and Training Alliance to propel advances in the expanding field.

"We are pleased to contribute our strengths in legal technology and policy to the new alliance," says Lee Fisher, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law Dean and Joseph C. Hostetler-BakerHostetler Chair in Law. "The collaboration will prepare students for a cyber workforce in which complex problems will need to be solved at the intersection of disciplines and sectors."

The agreement to jointly develop cybersecurity education, research and training programs in Western Pennsylvania and Northeast Ohio will leverage the unique combination of strengths of the three schools.


C|M|LAW partnered with the Monte Ahuja College of Business StartUp Vikes program and event sponsor BakerHostetler to host the Global Legal Hackathon for Northeast Ohio February 23-25. The Cleveland site was one of 11 local sites in the United States and 40 throughout the world across 22 countries spanning six continents.  The winning group, "Team INCO-Herent," featured C|M|LAW students Dana Beveridge, Mara Hirz and Jackson Biesecker, among others. " Team INCO-Herent"  moves on to Round Two of t he   competition March 11-12. 

C|M|LAW student Christopher Kolezynski worked as part of a group of Cleveland State University students helping to ensure the 2018 Winter Olympics were safe from cyberattacks as part of a partnership between C|M|LAW's Center for Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection and the  Cyber Resilience Institute (CRI).

Rogers to Keynote Cybersecurity & Privacy Protection Conference
Former Congressman Mike Rogers, former Chair, US House of Representatives Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HSPCI) and David M. Abshire Chair, Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress will open the C|M|LAW Center for Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection's third annual conference on Thursday, March 22. 


National Jurist featured C|M|LAW's Global Space Law Center's new online space law course, " Space Law: A Global View," as one of its unique summer courses of interest.

Jon Pinney '00 Managing Partner of Kohrman, Jackson, and Krantz, talked to C|MLAW faculty, staff, students and administration on various ways technology is being implemented in legal practice and ways to innovate law school curriculum accordingly.

C|M|LAW Hall of Fame Member Steve Potash '78, Founder and CEO of OverDrive, was featured on WKYC 3 for his company's continued innovation and success.

Equality Ohio, headed by Alana Jochum '10, has received funding to establish a state-wide legal clinic that specializes in LGBTQ issues. Maya Simek '10 will startup and head the clinic.  The clinic is currently looking for attorneys interested in participating.

Professor Chris Sagers  was a guest on CNBC's "Power Lunch" where he discussed recent news that Google may face renewed antitrust scrutiny by U.S. regulators.

Professor Brian Ray, Director of the Center for Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection, along with a pair of C|M|LAW students talked with News 5 Cleveland about Russian bots targeting universities.


Professor Gwendolyn Roberts Majette appeared on News 5 Cleveland as part of an investigative report on in-home health care agencies and their levels of care.

Professor Jonathan Witmer-Rich appeared on News 5 Cleveland to discuss the City of Cleveland's decision making on settling lawsuits. 

Professor Emeritus Candice Hoke, co-founding director of the Center for Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection, was interviewed by C-SPAN's "The Communicators," where she discussed the issues arising between democracy & technology as well as the work of C|M|LAW's Center.  She also was quoted on the topic of election security by the Huffington Post.

C|M|LAW's "Lawyers for Social Justice" admission video won a Silver ADDY in the "Film, Video & Sound" category at the American Advertising Awards.
