RSVP Now for Networking Opportunities for Teachers of Color

TOCNetworkWHAT is this opportunity and WHY participate?
In October teachers of color and of diverse backgrounds from across the state met to discuss ways the Washington State Network Partners (CSTP, WEA and OSPI) could support, retain and increase the number of teachers of color in Washington. One idea was to convene teachers of color in regions and provide an opportunity connect and network with one another. This Convening will offer teachers of color a time to network and discuss important issues specific to teachers of color and of diverse backgrounds, as well as share opportunities to engage with the Washington State Network Partners.

WHO is this opportunity for?
We invite teachers of color and of diverse backgrounds to join us. Please feel free to share this with other colleagues you think may be interested.

WHEN is this and HOW much does it cost?
This is a free event. A light breakfast and lunch will be served and clock hours will be provided by WEA. There are two opportunities:
  • 9 am - 1 pm on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at the WEA Uniserv office in Yakima, WA.
  • 9 am - 1 pm on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at the Camas District Office.
HOW do I register?
Space is limited at each event and each event has its own registration link. Please note that this event is intended for teachers of color and of diverse backgrounds only.

2018 TPEP Best Practices Colloquium

TPEPOn March 1st, CSTP hosted the Fourth Annual Spring TPEP Best Practices Colloquium in Tacoma. It was an energizing day of learning and networking with educators from around the state sharing ways they are using what they learning from student growth to improve teacher practice. A rich variety of schools and districts were represented, prompting meaningful conversations around both teacher and student growth.

Sue Anderson, Director of Educator Effectiveness at OSPI, and Whitney Meissner, Superintendent of La Conner School District, launched the day by challenged us to be relentless in supporting each student to grow. Through short, 5 minute Ignite presentations and deeper-dive workshops, eight schools/ districts opened their practice to support our learning. All of the presenters gave us an honest glimpse of their work and how they are continuing to reflect and grow.

The presenters also helped the participants to hear a variety of voices and perspectives on student growth. In one workshop, we heard from a student who graciously articulated how mentoring other students has impacted her own growth. One team shared how using student perceptions surveys to illicit authentic student voice has impacted teacher practice and classroom culture. Yet another teacher shared her journey of how embarking on understanding one student's heritage and cultural connects transformed her teaching.

You can view the all of the Ignite Presentations on the CSTP website at http://cstp-wa.org/events-calendar/tpep/tpepmaterials/.

Presenters and topics included:
  • Seattle Public Schools: Leveraging Teacher Leadership to Sustain Knowledge and Learning About Student Growth
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, Yakima School District: Beyond Admiring the Data
  • Lake Stevens School District and Spokane Public Schools: Grading for Growth: Transform points into practice
  • North Kitsap High School, North Kitsap Public Schools: Real and Relevant Student Growth
  • River Ridge High School, North Thurston School District: The Journey of a High Functioning PLC
  • Saltar's Point Elementary School, Steilacoom Historical School District: Learning from Our Students
  • White Swan High School, Mt. Adams School District: Yes, I Can!
  • Washington Middle School, Olympia School District:Putting Yourself in Someone Else's Shoes
Another highlight of the day was the Job Alike Session in which participants were able to engage in problem solving conversations and share experiences in job specific groups. The day was capped off with facilitated planning sessions from Framework Authors Patty Maxfield with CEL, Kate Dickson from Danielson, Tina Boogren from Marzano, and Ron Sisson from AWSP, allowing even further conversation related each specific instructional framework.

A big thank you to all who presented and attended! You made it a day full of learning, passion and hope for what is possible.

Please visit the CSTP website to view the Keynote and Ignite Presentations as well as workshop materials.
