Downtown Boston Businesses Flush with Patrons from March of Our Lives

Thousands upon thousands of people attended the March for Our Lives on the Boston Common this past Saturday. An unintended and welcome symbiotic effect was that the Downtown Boston area received an influx of visitors who ate at restaurants, patronized cafes and shopped at stores.

"It was very busy. We sold out of pastries, which doesn't normally happen. The line was out the door. We sold out of retail bags of coffee and that has never happened. People were buying a cup of coffee and a bag of beans," said Mason Reiter, barista and supervisor of Thinking Cup (165 Tremont St.).

"It was busier than a normal Saturday. It was good for business and it was for a good cause. It was like the Women's March. We sold a lot of pizzas," said Lindo Defaras, manager at Sal's Pizza (150 Tremont St.)

"We sold out of burgers and fries by the end of the night," said Jose Gutierrez, manager of MOOYAH (140 Tremont St.)
Mayor Walsh and Dancing Lions Celebrate McDonald's of the Future

Mayor Martin Walsh joined McDonald's franchisees Vern and Carol Chin to celebrate the grand reopening of their Washington Street restaurant that now offers table service.

The McDonald's (329 Washington St.) reopened on Feb. 28th after being fitted with self-service ordering kiosks and now offers table service.

"When I was growing up you didn't buy a Big Mac from a kiosk or have table service," said Mayor Walsh. "(To) the Chins: Thank you for what you do. You show there is a path for people to move up in business. Thank you for investing in Downtown Crossing." The Mayor also championed that the franchisee is woman- and immigrant-owned.

After the Mayor spoke there was traditional Chinese lion dancing inside and outside to bring good luck and fortune to the business. The Chins also presented donations to staff of the nearby Josiah Quincy Upper and Lower Schools.
Barre Groove Brings Ballet and Cheerleading Fitness Classes to Downtown Boston

Former New England Patriots cheerleader Alanna Perry opened Barre Groove (52 Province St., 3rd Floor) in January. The studio offers fitness classes mixed with dance, ballet, cheerleading and even trampolines!

"I've never seen so many people smile during a fitness class," said Perry to the Boston Business Journal. "People pick up the pom-poms and it's like straight smiles for an hour. That, to me, is something you can't teach. To make someone that happy is an experience."

"Barre Groove is the name of our studio and our signature class! Our studio has three methods: Barre Groove, Pom Groove and Jump Groove. Each method is designed to give you a total body workout with elite results, along with a fun and unique community experience. Come groove, shake, jump and tone with us!" said Perry.

The first class at Barre Groove is free, and a five-class package for new clients costs $40. Click here for more information about classes and Barre Groove.

Barre Groove also hosts monthly BG Social events like "barre at the bar" in which they go to restaurants and teach barre (at the bar) and then have brunch. Perry said it's a great and fun way to workout, meet new people, network and to experience new places.

Snow & Cold Weather Safety Info:
Shoveling, Parking and More

Whether you're a property owner, a homeowner or a resident with a car it's important to know about shoveling and parking regulations, snow emergencies and more. The City of Boston has a resourceful webpage providing all necessary info here, and below is important info to know for when the white stuff comes down.

Shoveling Info:
Click here for City of Boston rules on clearing snow.
Property owners must:
  • Clear sidewalks within three hours of snowfall ending or three hours after sunrise if it snows overnight, and
  • Clear at least a 42-inch-wide path for wheelchairs and strollers.
Do not shovel snow into the street or you can be subject to fines. Also please remember to:
  • Remove ice to bare pavement or make as level as possible and treat with sand, sawdust, or similar material.
  • Please clear any snow that may be blocking a handicap ramp, fire hydrant or catch basin.
  • Don't leave snow or ice on stairways or fire escapes. All common means of exit must be clear in case of fire or another emergency.
What To Do With Your Car When It Snows:
During a snow emergency main roads need to be clear for plows and emergency vehicles. If you're parked on one of these main roads during a snow emergency, you may be ticketed and your vehicle may be towed. How do you know if you can't park on a street during a snow emergency? Check the signs posted on the street. Also, here is map of restricted roads due to a snow emergency.

Click here for a City of Boston list of discount parking garages available during snow emergencies. Click here for the BID's webpage of local parking garages. It is recommended you contact the parking garages to see if they are open for vehicles.

Please also call the BID's dispatch line at 617-261-0066 to report sidewalks, handicapped ramps or other Downtown Crossing public ways that need to be shoveled. Our Ambassadors will be out in the snow 24 hours a day making sure the sidewalks are clear!
