Longfellow Friends Annual 4th Of July Parade!
The 48th annual Longfellow Friends of the Traditional 4th Parade will take place on
Wednesday, July 4, rain or shine, at
10:00 am. Lineup begins at
9:15 in the parking lot of Longfellow Elementary School. It will travel from one end of Hesperus Drive to the other, and return to the school via Eliot's Oak Road. This year, we will be honoring retiring State Senator Ed Kasemeyer for his many years of service to our community. Also, volunteers from "Food for Tomorrow" will again be participating, so please bring some canned goods to donate to the food bank. You are welcome to participate, too, or just come and watch. No advance registration!
The parade will be followed by a softball game at
noon between the Eliot's Oak Nuts and the Hesperus Wrecks, to be held on Field #3 at the Cedar Lane Park entrance on Cedar Lane.

Food for Tomorrow Participates in Longfellow Fourth of July Parade
Fourth of July is nearly upon us and all of us in Mary Kay's office are very excited as we prepare for another year of Food For Tomorrow's participation in the Longfellow parade! Food For Tomorrow has walked in the parade for many years now, collecting canned and non-perishable foods for the Howard County Food Bank. We would appreciate any help in promoting Food For Tomorrow's participation in the Friends of Longfellow fourth of July parade. Please see below for details.
Food for Tomorrow, a student-led grassroots campaign to raise food, money, and awareness for the Howard County Food Bank, will participate in Longfellow Friends of the Traditional Fourth beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Hesperus Drive and Eliot's Oak Road.
The Food Bank needs the following items:
Cereal Tuna
Pasta & Rice Pasta Sauce
Baby Food Coffee and Tea
Juice Boxes Healthy Snacks
Peanut Butter Canned Fruit
Canned Beans Low Sodium Vegetables
Look for the pick up truck and the volunteers who will be thrilled to see you as you help them fill the back of the truck with food!

HCCA's "Top Dog" Eating Contest!
Harper's Choice Community Association's first "Top Dog" eating competion is taking place at National Night Out, Tuesday, August 7th., Anyone 18 and older who is interested in competing in the National Night Out "Top Dog" event may click here to register or simply stop by Joseph Square in Harper's Choice Village Center, Tuesday August 7th, anytime between 6pm - 8pm and speedily consume five deli-style hot dogs and buns. An HCCA representative will time each participant and the person with the fastest times will win the grand prize: gift cards to "Tour The Restaurants of The Mall In Columbia."

SUMMER MEALS PROGRAM AT HCMS
The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) will be offered at Harper's Choice Middle School from now until August 17, 2018. Free summer meals will be offered to all children, 18 and younger from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Forest Forensics Events for Teens

This year we launched a season series of "forest forensics" events designed to engage teens in studying a natural landscape and using the evidence to piece together what has happened in the past. Participants will act as "detectives" as they explore the natural landscape of distinct parts of the Patapsco State Park system. The summer event is on
August 12th
!
MD Appalachian Trail Hikes

In April we began a series of seven hikes that will take us along the entire 41.5 miles of the Appalachian Trail that crosses through Maryland. These hikes will range in length from 3 to 8 miles and have limited spaces available to families that have already participated in at least one other CFIN event. The next one is on July 15th. Street Sweeping In Your Area
Street sweepers are expected to service the following areas thru Friday, July 6, weat
her permitting. Sweeping operations take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. Sweeping staff does take measures to avoid sweeping a street on its designated trash and recycling collection days.

African Performers, Exhibitors and Food Vendors Needed for October CultureFest in Howard County
African musicians, dancers, exhibitors and food vendors are needed for the upcoming "Africa CultureFest: The Countries and Cultures of Black Panther and Beyond," which will be hosted by Columbia Association (CA) and the Howard County Library System.
This free family event will be held on Sunday, October 14 from 1:30-4:30pm at Howard County Library System's Miller Branch (9421 Frederick Road in Ellicott City).
The Africa CultureFest is a great place for individuals, bands, organizations and dance groups representing the cultures, traditions and languages highlighted in the movie Black Panther - as well as other places on the African continent - to participate in an afternoon of performances, displays and demonstrations.
The producers of Black Panther drew upon a wide range of African cultures, traditions and languages from countries as varied as Algeria, Benin, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mali, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, South Africa, and Tanzania. For this Africa CultureFest, it is hoped that residents of Howard County (and nearby) who are from these and other African countries can represent their cultures and traditions at the Africa CultureFest through exhibit tables and performances. Performers can be children or adults.
Food trucks from any of the African countries or cultures are also needed to sell snacks and refreshments.
At this free event, people are invited to show the Howard County community what makes their countries and cultures unique. Exhibitors may not sell items or services unless they are food truck vendors selling food. Musicians will be asked to perform for 10-15 minutes.
At the event, families will be able to pick up a "CultureFest Passport" and complete it for door prizes by visiting exhibitors' tables. Photos will be taken at the event of exhibitors, performers and the audience.

Did you know that all Longfellow Kindergarten through 5th grade students will have access to DreamBox online math learning over the summer? This is a great time to have your child try out DreamBox at home or at the library. If you have any questions about logging on, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's math teacher or our math support teacher, Ms. Friedman.
To access DreamBox on a computer, go to
https://hcpss.me and select the "Clever" button. Your child should be prompted to enter his/her username and password. This is the same user name and password he/she uses in technology class and to sign on to any of the laptops at school. On the next page, select the "DreamBox" button to begin the program. DreamBox is also available for iPads. Download the free DreamBox App. However, students will need to log in through Safari. Use Safari to go to hcpss.me. Follow the same steps above and after logging in, you will be redirected to the DreamBox app.

ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE NEWS AND NOTES
ONLY ONE MEETING IN AUGUST
Get your applications in for those late summer projects! The Architectural Committee will meet on August 21. The deadline for application submissions will be Tuesday, August 7. If you miss that deadline, your application will not be able to be reviewed until September 11 when the AC resumes their regular bi-weekly meeting schedule.
DO YOU WANT TO SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY BUT DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START?
If you have a desire to have a positive impact in Harper's Choice, this could be the opportunity for you. We are seeking interested individuals who are available the second and fourth Tuesday evening each month to serve on the Architectural Committee. The AC meets twice monthly at 7:30 p.m. to review architectural change applications, discuss covenant violations and keep the guidelines current. Note: persons wishing to serve on the AC must be able to obtain a Letter of Compliance from this office stating that their property is free of covenant violations. Contact the
Covenant Advisor for more information.

BEWARE OF UNLICENSED CONTRACTORS
Before you hire a contractor, ask to see their license. Hiring an unlicensed contractor may put you at risk for shoddy construction and additional costs down the road. Their work may not meet local building codes, construction standards and permitting requirements. And, if the contractor or one of his employees is injured while on your property, YOU may be held liable if they are not bonded and insured. Architectural Committee Meetings
Changes made to the exterior of homes in Harper's Choice require approval of the Village Architectural Committee (AC).
The AC will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 7:30 PM to review applications.
The deadline to submit applications for approval is two weeks prior to the next meeting date.
