Business News From The City of Frederick, Maryland
May 2018

Hello
Apparently babyboomers like me (yes - believe it or not the
Beatles Hard Days Night Album came out the year of my birth), are being replaced in the workplace at an increasing rate by millennials. Data from the
Pew Research Center says that “more than one in three (35%) working Americans are millennials, eclipsing other generations in the labor force”. Millennials are defined as the current generation aged 21 to 36 years of age and in 2017 more than 56 million were in the workforce according to
Moneyish.com – significantly outnumbering GenXers (33%) and Baby Boomers (41%).
Future success requires Frederick and its industry partners to attract young professionals to our community and employment opportunities. This requires creative placemaking, transit, and cool urban residential and work environments with a robust after hours scene. This issue of Business ENews is dedicated to workforce trends of millennials and now GenZ.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the recent flooding which Frederick experienced and which affected many homeowners and businesses alike. If you experienced flood damage, please report such damage on the
City's website, so the total impact of the storm(s) can be tallied. Tune in here next month as we report the impact on Frederick’s business community.
Best regards,
