BEST PRACTICES SHARED AT THE 3RD ANNUAL PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY PET WASTE MANAGEMENT SUMMIT

Attendees representing more than a dozen municipalities and several homeowners and civic association in Prince Geogre's County attended the
3rd annual Prince George's County Pet Waste Management Summit in Largo last month. Joseph Gill, the Interim Director of the County's
Department of the Environment, provided a rousing welcome, urging people to
take care of their home places, whether by picking up after pets to improve local streams and beautify neighborhoods, or by engaging in a host of other actions that we can all take to collectively make our planet a better place.
Many of the attendees have been participating in this County initiative for more than a year, having installed pet waste stations provided by the County at no cost, monitored the stations' usage, and launched outreach campaigns designed by the County and customized for each town. They shared their successes and challenges with each other, and suggested ways to improve the program going forward.
SM staff, in partnership with Prince George's County Department of the Environment, will be working with several new municipalities on pet waste management this year, including North Brentwood, New Carrollton, Morningside and Cheverly, as well as several civic and homeowners associations.

tents and events, as well as fun and games for the whole family. Our Chesapeake Conservation Corp volunteer, Kelly Peaks, along with three other volunteers, Bradley Simpson, Jay Kinnaman, Thomas Urban, and Elena Perry, educated the public about the "Scoop the Poop" program as a new addition
to the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation's tent on McKeldin Mall. The program highlights the importance of cleaning up after your pet because of the harmful effects its waste has on the environment. Those who stopped by were able to play a pet poop toss game, pet dogs, receive community outreach materials, and enjoy freebies. Overall, the event was a success and we were able to educate kids and adults alike on how to better care for the environment and their community.

MOCO STORMWATER SUMMIT FOR HOMEOWNERS, JUNE 4

Montgomery County Stormwater Summit for Homeowners, to be held June 4 at the Silver Spring Civic Building. County residents, civic associations and businesses that are interested in learning more about stormwater issues and methods of addressing them, including the County's
RainScapes rebate program, are invited to attend. Free; registration required. Light refreshments will be provided.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' (COG)
Climate and Energy Leadership Awards recognize organizations that develop climate stewardship projects and programs that engage and serve the region's underserved communities. The awards program highlights a broad range of climate solutions for their unique engagement practices as well as their results, creativity, and replicability.
The award categories include:
- GOVERNMENT AGENCY (local, state, regional, quasi-govt, utilities or authorities)
- NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION (non-profit, citizen or community-based groups)
