2019 MAPB Public Media Impact Award Nominations Due June 5
There will be up to two awards given - one Professional (all professionals including volunteers working in public broadcasting) and one Donor (individuals or foundations). The recipients will be recognized following the 2019 MAB Advocacy Conference on August 6 at the JW Marriott in Grand Rapids. Learn More

MAB's Annual Capitol Day Will Connect Broadcasters and Lawmakers on May 14
The Michigan Association of Broadcasters invites its members to be a part of its annual State Capitol Advocacy Day on May 14, 2019. This is a great opportunity to  engage state lawmakers to showcase television and radio stations' commitment and investment in their local communities. Register Here

Lawmaker Introduces Bill to Allocate Electoral Votes by Congressional District
State Representative Beau LaFave (R-108) introduced legislation to eliminate the winner-take-all approach to allocating electoral votes in presidential elections in Michigan and award electors on a congressional district-by-district basis and two electors at large to the candidate who wins the popular vote.    Read More

Microgrid Bill Introduced in the House
Legislation allowing critical facilities like hospitals, police stations, emergency response centers and water treatment plants to operate their own microgrids to receive power during outages and emergencies was introduced in the House. Read More

Federal/Regulatory Update

FCC Proposes 20% Hike for Most Radio Stations Annual Fees
According to a report in Inside Radio, the FCC released its preliminary annual regulatory fees guidelines. It appears that most  radio stations will pay an average of 20% more. Read More

The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) has announced the winners of the 2019 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards honoring outstanding achievement in broadcast and digital journalism, technical expertise and adherence to RTDNA's Code of Ethics.  Read More

Michigan Radio's Believed Podcast Wins Peabody Award
Michigan Radio's Believed podcast was named a winner of a prestigious Peabody Award on April 23. This is the first time Michigan Radio has won a Peabody Award.  Read More

Personalities at WLHT (Grand Rapids) and WTLZ (Saginaw) Win AWMF Gracie Awards
The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation (AWMF) has announced the Radio and Interactive Media winners of the 44th annual Gracie Awards, to be presented at a dinner on May 21 in Beverly Hills for national radio and a luncheon in New York on June 26 for local and student winners.  Two Michigan broadcasters will be honored.  Read More

AllAccess reports that MacDonald Broadcasting's WKCQ-FM (Saginaw) has hired Michigan broadcasting veteran Mike Scott for weekend air duties beginning May 4. Read More

WLNS Collects Electronic Junk for Earth Day
Earth Day 2019 took place April 22; and Nexstar Broadcasting's WLNS-TV (Lansing) honored the day by helping viewers discard unwanted electronic equipment and devices through recycling outside the station's studios.  Read More

Entercom Detroit Cleans Up For Earth Day

On April 22, staff at Entercom Communications Detroit banded together to clean up the wetlands across the street from the offices and road side near their offices on 11 Mile Road in Southfield, which houses WWJ-AM, WYCD-FM, WOMC-FM, WDZH-FM and WXYT-AM/FM.  Read More

ABIP 11 Don't Get Surprised by the FCC, Schedule Your Station's ABIP Inspection While 2019 Dates Are Still Available
NASBA General Council Richard R. Zaragoza has advised that for the next several years, broadcast stations will be facing a potentially serious risks of petitions and complaints when they file their license renewal applications.
The MAB's Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program (ABIP) is a unique partnership between the MAB and the FCC under which stations that participate can receive a three-year exemption from routine FCC inspections. 2019 Inspections are now being scheduled during the months of July, August and September.
