 Harvesting Intangible Assets Workshop
The
Mississippi Defense Diversification Initiative (MDDI) hosted a series of workshops on Harvesting Intangible Assets which showed defense contractors how to identify revenue-producing opportunities hiding just below the strategic surface. The workshops featured TEDx speaker
Andrew Sherman, partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Jones Day and a recognized international authority on the legal and strategic aspects of business growth. The series included a workshop at NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center focused on Blue Economy companies co-hosted by the
Mississippi Enterprise for Technology (MSET) and a train-the-trainer session at the Trent Lott National Center for Excellence in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship at The University of Southern Mississippi. The Harvesting Intangible Assets model allows companies, large or small, to leverage their intellectual property through improved strategies, licensing programs, innovation, and more.

Mississippi's Defense-Related Blue Economy Report Released
Mississippi Enterprise for Technology (MSET) prepared the
Mississippi's Defense-Related Blue Economy: Main Activities, External Drivers, Market Share, and Industry Outlook report for the Mississippi Defense Diversification Initiative (MDDI)which examines the defense-related Blue Economy in Mississippi, specifically its main activities and industry outlook.The defense-related Blue Economy in Mississippi is poised to modestly grow in coming years. Its main activities include Ship/Boatbuilding, U.S. Navy Support, Ports and Harbors, U.S. Army Support, and its largest external driver is federal spending, specifically from the Department of the Navy. Expected Navy budget spending and the
Governor's Ocean Task Force's priorities, federal spending in Mississippi should continue to increase and, in turn, will grow defense-related Blue Economy industries. This trend will continue to provide extensive diversification opportunities as companies with new technologies support Mississippi-based federal agencies, work collaboratively to address emerging needs, and develop technologies for the commercial market. MDDI is funded in part by the Department of Defense's Office of Economic Adjustment.

Economic Development Partnership of Alabama Names Ernie Cowart as Vice President
Cowart joined EDPA in 2000, serving most recently as Director of Business Information and has more than 20 years of experience in economic development.
He has worked EDPA's core business areas, including business information, recruitment, community planning and existing industry.
Cowart works with state agencies, regional partners, utility companies and local economic development organizations on recruitment and expansion projects.
"His vast economic development experience, leadership and diverse skillset will help us continue to strengthen EDPA's mission to attract, retain and grow jobs in Alabama, while encouraging innovation through our Alabama Launchpad program," said EDPA President Steve Spencer.
Cowart has a bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama and a master's in economic development from The University of Southern Mississippi. He also earned the Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) designation from the International Economic Development Council and serves on the board of Main Street Alabama.
