Hyndman Window
Those who attend the 8 am service have a chance to see the stained class over the altar up close. It remembers Isabella Forsyth Hyndman. Over the past decade or so, I have come to imagine her as another member of our congregation.

Isabella Hyndman died when she was 51, a widow. It seems that she was widowed quite young and without children. Because she was a widow (and literate), she could work for the Federal Government as a clerk. When she died in August 1899, her salary was about $800/year as a third class clerk. The salary of her Deputy was $21k 1899 dollars. About a month after she died, notices to creditors appeared advertising that she had left her estate to the Diocese of Ottawa.

So it came to be that the beautiful window was created in her memory. I think it is correct that there are relatively more women portrayed compared to men than in the other large windows.

Bringing Death Back to Life
Wednesday, April 18th – 7 pm, First Baptist Church 140 Laurier Avenue West

Compassionate Ottawa, a network of community volunteers, is working toward a new social model of community care to support the frail elderly and those dealing with death, dying, grieving and loss at any age. In collaboration with others, a conversation is emerging about how we can engage together to help individuals, families and caregivers prepare for the journey toward the end of life and the grief that follows. Many partners are stepping up to work with Compassionate Ottawa, and few are as important as the faith community whose call has always been to care for those who are in need. Come to hear from Compassionate Ottawa volunteers Jim Nininger, Tim Flaherty and Monica Patten, and to be part of the conversation!

After a long wait, St John’s is expecting up to 25 refugees in 2018, with 16 more in 2019 or 2020. We expect families that include grandparents, parents and children, and also several men arriving alone. One family may be here as soon as April 2018. With arrivals, we will need donations of furniture, clothing, and household items. And, of course, we always need money. Most importantly, however, please consider offering your talents for one of the support roles needed - see further info about roles (click here ----> Volunteer Roles
