"The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia."
We are a Resurrection People! The Easter season is a time to ponder what exactly that means. This past week provided a powerful occasion to do precisely that. Last Wednesday, April 4, marked 50 years since the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I remember the day, the terrible shock of it. He lived a remarkable life. It was flawed, of course, the way every life is, and yet it was a life of extraordinary courage, resolution, vision, and dedication. In his final days Dr. King must have sensed that his end was near because he left his own eulogy in his one of is last sermons. The eulogy provides a picture of how he hoped he would be remembered. I can't help but see it also as a vision of how every life well lived might aspire to be described.
Dr. King began by saying that he did not want a long funeral or an extended eulogy. He did not want people to mention his Nobel Peace Prize, for example, or any of his other many awards. None of that was important, he said. Instead of that, he said:
I'd like somebody to mention that day that Martin Luther King Jr. tried to give his life serving others. I'd like for somebody to say that day that Martin Luther King Jr. tried to love somebody....
I want you to be able to say that day that I did try to feed the hungry. I want you to be able to say that day that I did try in my life to clothe the naked. I want you to say on that day that I did try in my life to visit those who were in prison. And I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity. Yes, if you want to, say that I was a drum major. Say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter. I won't have any money to leave behind. But I just want to leave a committed life behind. And that is all I want to say. If I can help somebody as I pass along, if I can cheer somebody with a well song. . . then my living will not be in vain.
This is the eulogy of someone who truly lived their resurrection! I can think of no finer parting words for anyone.
Peace and grace,
Ernie +

Sr Elaine Coutu came to St Stephen's on Feb 18 to tell us about "Get on the Bus", a program which "brings children and their caregivers from throughout the State of California to visit their mothers and fathers in prison." In past years, St Stephen's has helped "Get on the Bus" by donating backpack materials for the children's bus trips to the prisons. This year "Get on the Bus" has determined that they will only accept financial donations.
Please consider making a financial donation to this important program. Continual contact with families helps to lower the recidivism rate of those who are incarcerated. If you wish to make a donation, please either make a check out to St Stephen's with "Get on the Bus" in the memo line, or make your check directly to "Get on the Bus". We will gather checks throughout April and then forward all checks to Sr Elaine.

Pastoral Care Need
Our good friend and St. Stephen's family member Jim Glancey could use your support. He has gangrene and is in a lot of pain. He is at home and would welcome a phone call, visit, or card. We have offered to provide a few meals and Jim will let Dottie Chin know what meals would be best. If you are interested in providing a meal, please contact Dottie Chin.

Bible Study at St. Stephen's
by Edy Unthank
Ou
r next bible study session will be "Meet the Disciples." Why did Jesus choose the 12? What did he see in them specifically? He did not invite 2 or 3. He did not invite 150 - he invited these specific 12 men.
Join us for a 5 week session beginning April 10. This is similar to the "What a Gift! Study" we had during Advent. Copies will be available for $5 on Sunday, April 8 for use in small groups or with family.

What can you teach?
There is an effort to reach out to the St. Stephen's community by offering a summer camp this year. The plan is to offer enrichment sessions to children from the ages of 5 to 12. Please tell us if you have a passion to teach any art or crafts, sing, music, sports, building, or helping kinders to improve their reading, cooking, stand on your head and rub your tummy.....ok maybe not that one, but you get the idea.
We are looking for teachers and helpers. Let Ann Little, Monica Moniz or Janet Thorsrud know if you are interested. We are in the plansning stage now and need to wrap it up soon. Reach out to us and let us know.
