When we write Love has no pride...
it is a reference to what's coming up on
May 13.
In December, the Custom House Maritime Museum was selected as the site of
the 2019 AIC RE-ORG Angels project. Since 1988, as part of its Annual Meeting, AIC (AMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR CONSERVATION) has worked with local conservators to develop an Angels Project. The primary goal of an Angels Project is to promote a broader understanding of the importance of cultural preservation while providing meaningful assistance to important local collections. Sites for past projects include the Naval Historical Center in Washington, D.C. and the American Alpine Club in Golden, Colorado.
Over the years, the Custom House collections room, above,
also
has become a place to stash excess items: unused exhibition cases, packing boxes, and non-collections pieces with no place else to go.
This semester, online student conservators have used collections data from the Custom House (objects lists and furniture dimensions) to create a new layout plan for our collections room.
One of the reasons the museum was selected was that we have such variety in our collection including both the largest and smallest items of any museum that applied to the AIC. They also saw we needed some help.
On May 13, a team of 20 students and professors will work for a full day to reorganize that space. They'll also be replacing much of our furniture. Everything will be pulled out of the room, sorted beneath the tent, stored in acid-free tissue and boxes, and then put back together.
It's a big job getting ready, but it will be well worth the trouble.

If you remember,
last fall our tent frame collapsed in a torrential downpour!
We will receive the replacement frame this week.
It is important that we have the tent up by Monday, May 13, for the Re-Org project.
We plan on putting up the new frame
next Saturday, May 11, 9 AM to noon.
We need your help!
If you can pitch in for an hour or two, please send us an
email so we can keep you posted, should there be rain, etc.
Thanks.
