Warbles from your Senior Warden  Edy Unthank

Spring is on its way!!  We are having lots of rain but it isn't quite so cold.  Soon it will be Easter!

But before we get to Easter, we have lot of preparation to do.  I am not talking about deciding what to bring to the Easter pot-luck, I am talking about the very spiritual preparation of Holy Week.  Soon it will be Palm Sunday - when we welcome Jesus with hosannas.  Then we have Maundy Thursday with foot washing and setting up the altar of repose at the back of the church.  This is our little re-creation of the Garden of Gethsemane.  We maintain an all night vigil from after the service on Maundy Thursday until the Friday noon service.  The Friday noon service presents the Stations of the Cross - we hear and pray about the steps up to Golgotha.  Friday evening will be the evening service from the prayer book with communion from reserve sacrament.  Then we have the Holy Saturday Easter Vigil.  We light the new fire and celebrate the resurrection!

I invite you to participate in as many of these services as you are able.  The all night vigil at the altar of repose requires people to volunteer an hour of their time.  The church is never empty during the vigil.  The labyrinth will be set up and there will be many books available for reading, meditation, and prayers.  If you do not want to be in the church alone, considering spending a quiet hour with a friend in the church.  A sign -up sheet will be available this Sunday.  This is a very significant spiritual practice and one that we have had here at St. Stephens for many years.  Please consider participating.

The Saturday service is also very significant.  The church is dark.  We light a new fire - and this fire lights the way and brings the resurrected Christ into the church to light our way.  By the way - that fire lights the new candle over the aumbry.  Each week altar guild lights a new candle from the candle lit the previous week.  So the fire we light on Saturday is the beginning of our perpetual light in St. Stephen's - maintained throughout the year until next Easter!

Then of course Easter Sunday!  The brunch, the egg hunt, the flowering of the crosses (bring flowers from your garden for the children) the joy, the celebration!  It is all spectacular..

I look forward to sharing this significant time with you.  It is a rollercoaster of observance - the joy of Jesus arriving in Jerusalem, the fear of what comes next, the tears and pain of the crucifixion, and the unbridled joy when He is Risen!  It is the story and the foundation of our faith.

Many blessings for the weeks ahead,
Edy
Also, here are two Angel List requests:

Needed:  An Angel to change the spent overhead fluorescent light bulbs in the office and kitchen.  We have the bulbs.

In addition, we need an Angel with a truck to pick up palms from Oak Hill Cemetery next week to decorate for Palm Sunday. Please see Edy

RED SHIRT DAY AT THE PRE-SCHOOL
Tuesday firefighters from station 27 engaged our pre-school students and the teens from Calero High School as safety was discussed.  The children learned by listening, looking and touch.  They know what it will look and sound like if a firefighter has to search for them in a smoky building.  Captain Reed and Sal did a wonderful job.  The red shirts are worn to match the red fire engine.

Also . . .
Wonder woman Wanda has been working with great diligence on keeping the grass out of our rose garden.  The Calero helped enlarge the area a little to make it neater and easier to mow.  The opportunity has arisen to plant a few more roses.  Three would be perfect.  If you feel so inclined, bring the potted rose bush to St. Stephen's and we will plan it for you.  Then we can add mulch so it will remain lovely.
Gift Card Update
Thank you to everyone who participated in the gift card program this month.  You earned $142.00 for St. Stephen's without any extra work.
Give yourselves a pat on the back.  The next order is due on April 15th

Museum Field Trips
The Bouquets to Art at the de Young Museum was fabulous again this year.  It was even more thought provoking due to our Lenten study -"Meeting Jesus on the Margins".  African American art was excluded or marginalized from permanent collections and exhibitions.  What a grand venue to see some of these works of art.
The next trip will be to Carmel on Friday April 20th.  We will be viewing Gallery 21 featuring Eyvind Earle plus lunch.  Plan on departing St. Stephen's parking lot at 10 am.

Lenten Study at St. Stephen's
by Edy Unthank

Tuesday, March 20, at   we continue our countdown on the Lenten study on Matthew 25.

The Lenten study will also meet on Sundays after church and on Tuesday mornings, whichever is convenient for you.

The next session will be on Sunday March 18.

What can you teach?
There is an effort to reach out to the St. Stephen's community by offering a summer camp this year. The plan is to offer enrichment sessions to children from the ages of 5 to 12.  Please tell us if you have a passion to teach any art or crafts, sing, music, sports, building, or helping kinders to improve their reading, cooking, stand on your head and rub your tummy.....ok maybe not that one, but you get the idea.
We are looking for teachers and helpers.  Let Ann Little, Monica Moniz or Janet Thorsrud know if you are interested.  We are in the plansning stage now and need to wrap it up soon.  Reach out to us and let us know.
