Our May meeting is a time for celebrating the end of a great year and two very special awards are presented to very deserving members.

The Ada Edwards Laughlin Award is named for the co-founder of National Assistance League.   It is a special recognition of a member who has significantly contributed to the chapter "behind the scenes". Jane Gregor, a member for over 20 years, is a most deserving recipient of the Ada Edwards Laughlin Award.   She is the backbone of the Thrift Shop. She wrestles the mountain of donations on Mondays, picks up donations from SunCity, and coordinates our Outreach.

The Anne Banning Award is named for the founder of National Assistance League. Mary Bartley is the very deserving recipient of the first Anne Banning Award. Mary exemplifies all the requirements for this honor. She served in major leadership roles. She demonstrates enthusiasm, guidance and expertise.  She was instrumental in the creation of Mecklenburg County Teen Court. Mary models personal commitment to the mission and values of our chapter.

During Assistance League Charlotte fiscal year 2017-2018, the Scholarship Expansion Committee distributed the following scholarships:

Summer Camp Enrichment Scholarships
Eight Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools' McKinney-Vento homeless student scholarships
10 Stratford-Richardson YMCA Day Camp/Read Charlotte Literacy Camp scholarships

Community School of the Arts
400 ArtsReach Program Scholarships
Summer camp and after-school musical instrument lessons, choir and art enrichment in the Oaklawn community, plus art therapy and enrichment for homeless families at Charlotte Family Housing.

12 Financial Aid Scholarships
Financial assistance for students to take private music lessons, private art lessons and group music and art classes with high-quality instructors.

Update on Operation School Bell
A toothbrush, well- fitting clothing, underwear; to many of us, these are a "given." Of course we have these items; they are basics. But for many of our Charlotte children, these are not. Many go without underwear and share a toothbrush with their siblings. The children who need our help is increasing, and Operation School Bell ® is expanding to meet their needs.
Meeting the ever increasing needs of children in a school district as large as Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) requires networking. In addition to the 2,000 children we clothe head to toe at our Center, we have expanded to provide coats, uniforms, hygiene kits, underwear, socks and individual hygiene items to more than 7,500 children this year!
We piggybacked onto Operation Check Hunger's mobile pantries supplying 600 school supply kits to children whose families attended the pantries. There are many children who cannot afford the fees/tuition for music and art lessons, as well as summer camp. We crossed over with our successful Scholarship program and provided the monies necessary for children to attend these wonderful and educational activities.
We gave 200 uniforms to Crisis Assistance Ministries. Our Outreach program provides two pairs of uniform pants and two uniform shirts to 225 children.
We expanded our books to include STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) books for 5 th  grade students who come to our center. Operation School Bell ®, is evolving to meet the needs of students. We are helping them to look and feel their best and giving them the opportunity to focus on their studies, rather than worrying about how they look. We are striving to instill a sense of confidence so that these students can go forward into the future, realizing their potential and achieving great things.
2017 -2018 Presidents Message
Kelly Fifield
Lights, Camera, Action!
Those words have been echoing in my mind ever since a member volunteer recently pointed out to me that our Chapter is much like a theater company.
Just like a theater troupe, we have volunteers who like the limelight and others who spend their time behind the scenes and all of them move our mission forward each and every opening day.
The smiles of the Thrift Store workers, personal shoppers, and mobile pantry staff shine on customers and community members like the warmest of spot lights.
Our member volunteers work tirelessly, often unseen, like stagehands. They spend hours behind the scenes preparing donated items to be sold in our Thrift Shop, prepping for the arrival of children who attend our Operation School Bell ®, filling weekend backpacks full of food for our Operation Check Hunger children, and studiously reviewing applications for scholarships.
Our personal shoppers, teen court volunteers, and Thrift Shop workers always hit their marks when helping our customers, the children who attend our Operation School Bell program, and the teens involved in our Mecklenburg County Teen Court program.
Our new Board of Directors is waiting in the wings to take on its new role as ushers for our Chapter as we work tirelessly to further our show-stopping mission: to provide every child an opportunity to succeed.
And then there is you, dear reader. You support us just as an audience supports the arts. When you offer your gently used items for us to sell in our Thrift Shop, donate money to any (or all!) of our many programs, shop at our events, and follow us on social media we can continue to feed, clothe, mentor and educate at-risk area children the true stars of our Chapter.
At Assistance League of Charlotte, we have something for everyone -from cast to crew. What role do you want? Stage-hand, leading actor, producer? Whatever it may be, our troupe needs you. Visit assistanceleague.org/charlotte to find out how you can join us.
Places, everyone!
