FOOTBALL MEDICINE CONFERENCE AT LEGENDARY WEMBLEY STADIUM

By Mario Bizzini

Wembley Stadium.

The Football Medicine Conference took place in London (England) between the 27th and 29th April. The 28th edition of this annual conference, organized by the Italian Isokinetic Medical Group, was hosted at the legendary Wembley stadium.  With more than 2500 participants from 90 countries and 187 renowned speakers (from 25 countries), it represents one of the largest sports medicine conferences worldwide!

The topic of this year was: "Football Medicine Community Meets the Universe of Sport."  Please refer to the related website (http://www.footballmedicinestrategies.com/en/) and Twitter hashtags #FFMED and #FFMEDWMN (yes, women in sport was on fire in Wembley!) to relive these exciting three conference days!

Left to right: Dr. Clare Ardern, Editor of JOSPT; Dr. Amy Arundale; Brooke Patterson; Dr. Gary O'Driscoll; Dr. Karin Silbernagel; Dr. Mario Bizzini.

The Swiss Sports Physiotherapy Association (SSPA), in cooperation with IFSPT, had the privilege - for the fourth time in a row - to present a workshop "Learning from Elite Women's Sports", which was organized by former IFSPT EB member Mario Bizzini (Switzerland) and Clare Ardern (Australia-Sweden), the new Editor-in-Chief of JOSPT.

Amy Arundale, United States; Nirmala Perera (Australia); and  Ummukulthoum Bakare, Nigeria, on the big screen at the conference.

The first two presentations focused on the female player's knee: Amy Arundale (New York, USA) on soccer, and Brooke Patterson (Melbourne, Australia) on Australian Football Women (AFLW). Both gave excellent overviews on the current evidence on epidemiology of knee injuries, which is high in both sports, especially in the new AFLW, prevention and return to play after ACL injuries in amateur and elite young female players. Evidence-based prevention programmes, such as PEP, 11+ /soccer and the new "PREP to PLAY" /AFL, are available, but implementation is essential. All organizations must move forward in this area. There's also a need for more research on woman football players in light of injury.

Karin Silbernagel presents at the IFSPT/SSPA workshop.

Karin Silbernagel (Delaware, USA/Sweden) gave a unique lecture on tendinopathies in female athletes, highlighting how the rehabilitation should address all domains of tendon health - symptoms, function, structure, psychological factors - and take into account modifying factors, such as genetics, metabolic factors, inflammatory conditions and hormonal factors. Dr. Gary O'Driscoll (London, England), Head of the Medical Services at Arsenal FC for ten years, discussed some of the challenges when working with elite female players. His words: "The biggest challenge for medical teams in women's sport is not to emulate the men. We don't have all the answers...we have very few! Remove bias, innovate, and use robust research."

Dr. Karim Khan, BJSM; Dr. Clare Ardern, JOSPT; and Dr. Carlo Ramponi, IFSPT Board of Directors.

The @BJSMPlus Twitter account quoted the SSPA/IFSPT workshop as one of the highlights of the conference, and Amy Arundale's slide "Call to action: we need more research on women football players!" was hot in the Twittersphere at Wembley.

From left to right: Alan McCall (Scotland); Mark Fulcher (NZ); Ida Akerlund (SWE); Nirmala Perera (AUS); Mario Bizzini (SUI); Amy Arundale, USA.

The workshop represented another occasion to promote the IFSPT flagship event: the Third World Conference of Sports Physical Therapy: High Performance to Clinical Practice, which will be held in Vancouver, Canada, October 4-5, 2019. Hope to see you all there!

Nicol van Dyk (Aspetar) , Andrea Mosler (AUS), Myles Murphy (AUS), Polly Dhar (AUS).

Mario Bizzini with Mesut Selami, a sports physical therapist from Istanbul, Turkey.
Mario Bizzini with Marcio Oliveria, sports physical therapist, Brasilia, Brasil.
