73 Students Lead 76 Trombones
in the Music Man This Week
Forty students on stage, three student directors, five stage managers, and about 25 crew members – plus a little help from AVPA students at CCHS. That what it takes to put on the spring musical at CCMS.

This week, Performances at CCMS, a free after-school program, presents The Music Man. It’s a mostly student-run production, led by Kathleen Balboa, who is both an eighth-grade English Language Arts teacher and works with Theater Arts – Performances at CCMS.

The student directors meet with Balboa once a week to work on the following week’s rehearsal plan. One student works primarily on vocals, and two collaboratively do the choreography. The five stage managers focus on hair/makeup, costumes, and props. Three are head stage managers, two are backstage during the production running scene changes and props, and one calls cues in the sound booth for the lights and sound. Lights are run by the high school, and sound is done by the high school and middle school crews working together. While the cast is onstage performing, the crew creates and acquires props, paints set pieces and make, fit, and organize costumes.

“The production, above all, involves the incredibly important aspect of building a community during a run of a show,” said Balboa. “T hese students grow immensely in their confidence and in their craft. Students who have never performed before grow by leaps and bounds every time they step on stage. They get to watch themselves succeed through something that is both terrifying and exhilarating all at once. The cooler part is that they do so while encouraging one another and being excited for each other when they improve or when they get shout outs on their performance. Having something to be proud of in real time does wonders for the risks they take in other parts of their education.”

All of these students are also learning life skills by managing their time and after-school commitments in order to be part of the production. Students are required to balance school and sometimes multiple extra-curricular activities, which encourages responsibility and organization. The students need to communicate with many different people to make these commitments happen.

“These students are some of the most hard-working, dedicated, passionate humans I’ve ever met. It is so evident in their work ethic throughout a production,” added Balboa. “This program is preparing them for AVPA at the high school in many different ways and will ultimately lead to stronger, more-experienced students ready to pursue the arts if that’s what they choose.”

“Performances at CCMS are an amazing opportunity for every student here at Culver Middle,” said Timmy Manos, who plays con man Harold Hill. “It is fun, teaches responsibility, and prepares us for the next level of theater – AVPA at CCHS. One of my favorite parts of performances is how we get to play characters that take us out of our comfort zone and test our skill, talent, and passion. I have recommended this program to a friend who is now having a great time as the mayor in The Music Man.

“With Tech Week right around the corner, it is the time that people start getting stressed over the show. However, with the supportive atmosphere and the wonderful community, there is no room for negative energy. Performances at CCMS is a wonderful program and The Music Man is going to be the best show yet because of the positivity and pure talent throughout the cast and crew.”

Performances at CCMS puts on two productions per year, free to the students who participate. In the fall, the group produced High School Musical.
CCHS Student Athletes Excel
as CIF Playoffs Approach
Culver City High School's student athletes are hitting their stride just as the CIF playoffs approach.

CIF playoffs begin the week of April 29, and playoff draws will be coming out on Monday morning. The Centaurs are ready!

The undefeated CCHS boys lacrosse team defeated El Segundo 18-6 on Wednesday to claim the Ocean League crown. The team is also selling scarves and beanies for $20 apiece as a team fundraiser at all of its games. Be sure to show off your Centaur gear!

The CCHS softball team notched two wins this week, defeating Hawthorne 18-3 and shutting out Beverly Hills 17-0 to claim co-Ocean League champion honors for the first time since 2004.

In baseball, the Centaurs defeated Beverly Hills 17-0 and 5-0, including a stellar no-hitter delivered by freshmen Alonso Reyes in yesterday's contest. The team finished second in Ocean League play.
In track and field, the girls team finished second in the Ocean League. Numerous athletes from the team qualified for CIF, led by 100m and 200m specialist Kayla Barnes, who anchored the first-place 4x100 relay team that also included Alero Soaris, Ava Belcher and Alexandria Williams. The boys team took the Ocean League title for the third year in a row.
The girls lacrosse team beat El Segundo 13-8 to become tri-league champions for the first time in the school history. The team recently honored its senior players with a ceremony at Senior Day.
In tennis , freshman Greg Troyan won the Ocean League Singles championship CCHS's first singles champ since 2001.

Looking back, the Culver City Unified School District Board of Education recognized the CCHS girls soccer team, which finished second in the CIF Regional Soccer Championships, at its Tuesday night meeting.

CCUSD Counselors and Parents Work Together to Support Culver City Students
Gone are the days of school counselors sitting in their office simply handing out college applications, making schedule changes for students who want to drop a class or meeting with the troublemakers in the school.

Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow.

CCUSD is proud of its counseling team that works every day to look out for the best interests of Culver City students at every level. But they need your help.

Parents are encouraged to contact a school counselor to help their children with a variety of issues, such as academic achievement; new school registration, orientation and transition; test interpretation; special needs; student crisis situations; family transitions; and higher education issues.

By focusing on parents' concerns and respecting why these concerns matter to you, school counselors offer options, including better ways to communicate with your child. For example, here's a great way to ask your child how things are going at school in a way that encourages them to really answer.

CCUSD Wants Your Feedback
Culver City Unified School District’s campuses were built over 50 years ago. We are embarking on district-wide campus master plans and educational specifications (design guidelines) to use as a strategic road map for the future. This is an exceptional opportunity to start the process to develop and renovate building spaces which nurture collaboration, innovation, and creativity for the next 100 years.

Your opinion is very important to us. The knowledge we gather from you will help us better understand your needs and interests to inform the master plans. Please take 8-10 minutes to fill out this survey and keep an eye out for announcements of each campus’ community evening forum in which you will have the opportunity to see draft master plans and give your input. Thank you in advance for completing this survey!

CCUSD Seeks Parent Input for Its Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP)
Each year, CCUSD invites its staff, students, and community members to review our current goals and make suggestions for next year's Local Control Accountability Plan or LCAP.

By completing this survey, you will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the current 2018-2019 LCAP and help us refine our actions to meet the three goals identified in the plan. We recognize that students, even when they come from the same family, may have different experiences. When answering your questions, you will have the opportunity to respond based on the experiences of up to four of your children.

The deadline for completing the survey is Friday, April 26, 2019. CCUSD appreciates your participation in this important process.
