RTMC Newsletter - August 2017
Accessibility Modifications Continue for the Brown Family
The Brown family was originally featured in the March edition of our monthly newsletter, as recently completed work to their home was highlighted. Since then, the Brown family has received a few additional modifications that have allowed Dr. and Mrs. Brown to spend more time together and live in a safe and healthy home.

If you do not recall, the Brown family is a senior couple that lives in Silver Spring. Rev. Dr. Brown had developed cancerous tumors on his spine, which made it difficult to navigate the steps around his home. Fortunately, his church built him a wheelchair ramp, granting him access to his basement. Upon RTMC meeting the Brown family, we discovered that he had been living in the basement for over a year. His basement living situation kept him separated from his wife, and the family space they have shared for more than 40 years.

Partnered with Adventist HealthCare, RTMC was able address some of the issues inside of the Brown's home and install two chairlifts (thanks to our partner Mobility Solutions) and completed weatherization work around the house.

These projects, which were completed in March, allowed Dr. Brown to move back upstairs and into his bedroom. After a year of living in his basement, Dr. Brown was finally able to enjoy his home as he remembered it, while being able to spend quality, comfortable, time with his loving wife.

Despite the recent renovations to their home, the Brown's still faced one obstacle that prevented Dr. and Mrs. Brown from having a safe and healthy home - their bathroom. As a result of his illness, Dr. Brown was paralyzed, making showering in a tub a nearly impossible task. With the help of some volunteers and partners, RTMC was able to complete a walk-in tub conversion for Dr. Brown. This new modification provides Dr. Brown a safe area to bath himself without having to move to a different floor of the home.
An Afternoon in the Park: RTMC Thanks Volunteers For Their Service
As a special "thank you" to all of the volunteers who assisted in National Rebuilding Day, Rebuilding Together Montgomery County invited everyone to a baseball game at Nationals Park. On July 9, 2017, over 180 RTMC volunteers and their families came together to watch the Washington Nationals match up against the Atlanta Braves in a high scoring game ending with a 10-5 win by the Nationals.

RTMC wants to thank all of its volunteers for all of the hard work you do. You have contributed over 5,000 volunteer hours over the past year, and have helped transform the homes and lives of over 110 homeowners in Montgomery County. We hope that you will continue to support us!
Safe Homes, Happy Residents: A Partnership Between RTMC and The Friedson Group
Some of you may remember the story that was published this past Spring, highlighting the partnership between RTMC and The Friedson Group. This partnership resulted in the creation of the Safe Homes, Happy Residents program. Money raised from this program is helping those most vulnerable throughout our county - seniors who wish to age in place, children with disabilities and the working poor. The program provides these homeowners with adequate fire safety prevention equipment such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers.

We are excited to announce that over $1,000 has already been raised this fiscal year through the program! Stay tuned over the next few months for updates and fire safety hints brought to you by The Friedson Group.
