Glenbard West Community -
Yes, it is true, this is the final newsletter for the school year. Please take a moment to carefully look it over and discuss it with your student. In it you will find information related to everything from finals to student recognition to the beginning of the school year for 2019-2020. Hopefully, this newsletter also demonstrates the amazing accomplishments in the areas of academics, sports and student leadership. Educators everywhere understand student success is often driven by the influence of our older, high achieving students. Glenbard West benefits hugely from our senior class and the example they set for all of our underclassmen. The teachers and staff here rely on them to accomplish all of the things that we do at West. Over the next nearly three weeks, we will enjoy our seniors and continue to rely on them as they exit our school with pride.
With
“Teacher Appreciation Week”
happening next week, it is appropriate to recognize the incredible teaching staff that we have at Glenbard West. If I had to characterize them, I would say that they are continually looking for ways to improve their craft. Our teachers are committed to using innovative and progressive strategies to help our students achieve at the highest level. Perhaps, most importantly, our teachers believe in our students. They build positive relationships and believe in supporting students when they struggle. We will be taking time to appreciate our teachers and encourage students and parents to do the same.
Glenbard West is also lucky to have phenomenal support from our parent volunteers. This year, Glenbard West Boosters will grant over $130,000 to our athletic programs, activities and academic areas. Additionally, Friends of Forensics and Association of Music Parents help to run large programs and commit countless hours to ensure that these activities are well supported. For those of you who do not know, we just experienced our most successful ever post-prom event with nearly 700 students attending. This would not happen without the leadership of our West Nation parents. A big thank you goes out to all of the parents who stayed up past their bedtimes to support our students and to ensure that there was a safe, fun option for all of our students attending prom.
Finally, May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Our related services team has been working with students to increase awareness of these issues and increase awareness of supports that are available to students inside and outside of the school. Earlier this week, a group of students served on a panel under the supervision of our team as they led a discussion around these topics. Below is the flyer used to advertise this event. Our teams will continue to work with students as we emphasize the need for student wellness and provide necessary supports for all Glenbard West Students.

Thank you for your continued support of Glenbard West, our students and our staff.

The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school district in recognition of students who have studied and attained a high proficiency in two or more languages, with one of those languages being English, by high school graduation. The Seal of Biliteracy is noted on the high school transcript and takes the form of a gold sticker provided with the diploma of a graduating senior. The seal serves as a statement of accomplishment for future employers as well as college admission.
The following students earned the seal for either Spanish, French or Chinese.

WEST STUDENTS CREATE LOVING
PORTRAITS OF REFUGEES
|
|
|
|
“This is not just another project. It symbolizes care, love and affection.”
Glenbard West students created portraits of refugee Rohingya children as part of the Memory Project, a charitable nonprofit organization that invites art teachers and their students to create and donate portraits to youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as violence, disasters, extreme poverty, neglect, and loss of parents. Watch the heartwarming video of refugee Rohingya children receiving our students’work
here.
The Rohingya ethnic minority has been called the "most unwanted" group of people on Earth. Nearly a million fled genocide in Myanmar last year and are currently sheltering in a huge refugee settlement in Bangladesh. Most of these families have little more than a few cooking pans and a handful of clothes. For these children, who have rarely seen photos of themselves, the portraits will be gifts they could never have previously imagined. West students collaborated with other students around the world to show these children they are not “unwanted.”
Students in David Gucciardi’s Painting I and Painting II classes, and Colleen Doyle's Drawing II class created the portraits.

NEWS FROM STUDENT SERVICES
|
|
|
|
As we enter the final month of the school year, it is important to reflect on the tragedy that occurred within our community. Our Student Services department has been working closely with many students and their families in the aftermath. Several people have inquired as to the best ways to support their grieving teen.
Often, what a grieving person needs most is a willing person to support them. This may mean being able to sit with the grieving person and listen to his/her feelings in a nonjudgmental way, without trying to problem-solve. Though it can be awkward or uncomfortable when feeling as though you may not know what to say, in most cases, what is most valuable is a pair of ears that is willing to hear the story. Below is a list of some important key concepts/suggestions that we feel are worthy of mentioning:
- Acknowledge the situation. Speaking to the situation directly can be important; this can show that you are not afraid to have an honest conversation about the loss they have experienced. Always make sure you choose an appropriate time and place to have a conversation like this, so he/she can feel safe talking to you about their loss.
- Express your concern. Show that you are aware that this has affected them and that you are there when they need help. Example: "I'm sorry to hear that this happened. I am here when you need me."
- Reflect on their emotions. One way of demonstrating that you are able to hear their story is by reflecting back to them what they are saying. Example: "I can see that you're sad and confused about why all this happened."
- Be genuine in your communication and don't hide your feelings. It is OK to show that you are also saddened by the loss and that you do not have all the answers. Example: "I'm not sure what to say, but I want you to know I care."
- Offer your support. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do for someone is just letting them know that you are there for them when they need you. Example: "I want you to know I'm here for you. Tell me what I can do."
- Ask how he or she feels. Don't assume you know how the bereaved person feels on any given day. Sometimes just asking how they feel allows the opportunity for him or her to express their feelings.
- LISTEN: Be an active listener. Though it can be difficult to know what to say, being able to listen effectively is most important. Often finding the right words is less important than letting your student share with you the nature of the loss. It's not unusual for well-meaning people to avoid talking about the loss or mentioning the deceased person, thinking this is helping. However, the grieving person often needs to feel that others are willing to acknowledge the truth of the situation.
Some strategies to be an active listener include:
- Accept and acknowledge all feelings. Let the grieving person know that it's OK to cry in front of you, to become angry, or to break down. Don't try to reason with someone over how he/she should or shouldn't feel. He/she should feel free to express feelings knowing that you are willing to listen without judgment, argument, or criticism.
- Be willing to sit in silence. It's not your job to get him/her to start talking. Instead, be willing to be present and show you are ready to listen when he /she is ready to speak. If you can't think of something to say, you can show your support through eye contact, a squeeze of the hand, or a reassuring hug.
- Let him/her talk about the loss. They may need to tell the story over and over again, sometimes in great detail. Be patient. Repeating the story is a way of processing and accepting the death. With each retelling, the pain lessens.
- Offer comfort without minimizing the loss. Let them know that what he or she is feeling is OK. If you've gone through a similar loss, share your own experience, if you think it would help. However, don't give unsolicited advice, claim to "know" what the person is feeling, or compare your grief to his or hers.
Additionally, we would like to re-introduce you to the Student Services Team that is available at Glenbard West to assist students who may be continuing to struggle with the loss. In our roles at West, we also help teens with a variety of other issues such as: stress at school, LGBTQ+ concerns, eating disorders, anger management issues, peer problems, family issues, improve problem solving strategies, academic support, substance abuse prevention, responsible choices in sexual decisions, help for friends, self-injurious behaviors, anxiety, depression, grief & loss.

How students can seek help for themselves or for a friend?
- Talk to one of your teachers/coaches/sponsors and have them connect you with someone in Student Services.
- Email one of the members of the Student Services Department.
- Come down to Student Services and say that you need to meet with someone.
- Do not hesitate to come down to talk about anything that is bothering you. We would rather you be proactive instead of reactive with a problem.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to any one of the Student Services staff members if you have any questions and/or concerns.

The Gdub Yoga Club
started in 2013 with two students who felt stressed and wanted a way to gather students to unwind and manage it better, plus they thought yoga would be fun.
And it has been! The club meets every Wednesday before school with Mr. McCluskey as the moderator and Ms. Julie Mackey leading the yoga instruction.
Two years ago, the District created an initiative to bring more mindfulness activities to the students and staff. The yoga club student board was encouraged by the initiatives that School Counseling was creating to utilize the new mindful space on the 4th floor bridge of the science wing. Last school year we launched "Mindfulness Meditation" on the 1st Wed of the month. The mindful sessions are led on rotating basis with staff from School Counseling, Social Work, Student Services and Julie Mackey depending on everyone’s schedule. There are yoga mats/meditation cushions provided in the Bridge and the atmosphere really lends itself to a peaceful experience before school with the sun rising. It’s become everyone’s favorite spot. The other Wednesday’s of the month, the club meets in the dance arts room in Biester. With the help of the Boosters, PE budget, and the football program, we have enough mats, blocks and yoga straps for 75. All are welcome to join!

Capital improvements key to maintaining a community asset
|
|
It’s been a long winter, but one of the signs of summer coming is the Board of Education approving our list of summer capital improvement projects. We continue to make improvements to our buildings as part of our 10-year master facility plan. We are very thankful for the community’s support of our 2014 referendum, which makes these improvements possible.
Here’s a look at Glenbard West projects completed in the past three years:
·
New classroom wing, including eight science classrooms, two green roofs, solar panels,
receiving dock, photography lab and science department office
·
Added air conditioning throughout the building
·
Added energy efficient LED lighting in most areas of the building
·
Renovated six science classrooms into eight larger classrooms
·
Created a writing lab
·
Replaced roof over a wing of the main building
·
Replaced floor in four classrooms and boys PE locker room shower
·
Added locker room in Biester field house
·
Added permanent bleachers at Memorial Field
·
Repaired four tennis courts
·
Reconstructed masonry parapet
The following are projects we will complete at Glenbard West in summer 2019:
·
Field house lighting replacement
·
Auditorium carpet flooring replacement
·
Façade improvements – parapet reconstruction
We anticipate all capital project work to be completed before Aug. 2.
Glenbard West is a beautiful school, and much like maintaining our homes, we need to invest in renovations and repairs to the building. I am proud to work in a community that supports our students and staff, as well as our facility plans.
