Sons of the American Revolution Outstanding Citizenship Award

The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school district in recognition of students who have studied and attained a high proficiency in two or more languages, with one of those languages being English, by high school graduation. The Seal of Biliteracy is noted on the high school transcript and takes the form of a gold sticker provided with the diploma of a graduating senior. The seal serves as a statement of accomplishment for future employers as well as college admission.

This has been another great year for Glenbard West athletics as we move into a busy and hectic time of year with spring sports.  Once again we have over 700 student athletes participating in spring sports this season and thank you to all of our coaches for providing great opportunities and life-long learning to our student athletes. We are very proud to have our students well rounded with over 75% involved in athletics and activities here at West. At times, weather dictates changes and reschedules and we ask everyone to stay up to date with all changes on our athletic website at http://il.8to18.com/glenbardwest for the most recent updates and game schedules. We look forward to hosting a variety of upcoming events including the IHSA Boys and Girls Lacrosse Sectionals on Memorial Field the week of May 20. We will also be hosting the IHSA Baseball Sectional at Village Green and the IHSA Softball Sectional at Memorial Field the week of May 27.

The summer will be here before long and I would encourage everyone to enroll in Glenbard West summer camps through the Glen Ellyn Park District. The complete list of camps can be found on our website along with the Glen Ellyn Park District website at www.gepark.org . We look forward to all of our current and future Hilltoppers being involved and staying active during the summer.

Please note that this year all fall sports will begin on Monday August 12, 2019.  Fall sports include Boys and Girls Cross Country, Boys and Girls Golf, Football, Boys Soccer, Girls Volleyball, Girls Tennis, and Girls Field Hockey. In order to participate, registration must be completed on the parent portal for PowerSchool which includes the Athletic Code Agreement and Concussion Awareness Agreement. In addition, a current physical within the last 12 months MUST be turned into the Athletic Office prior to practicing. The Glenbard West Athletic Handbook can be found on the Athletic website as well.

Volleyball team raising money for brain cancer research

Please join the Glenbard West boys volleyball program in supporting the AGS Foundation at the boys volleyball games on Tuesday, May 7. The AGS Foundation was started in honor of Glenbard West alumnus Andrew Garwood and raises money for brain cancer research and scholarships.

Game times: freshman A and JV 4:30 p.m., freshman B and varsity 5:30 p.m. in Biester Gym. Tickets for gift basket prize drawing after the varsity match will be sold throughout the games. If you cannot make the game but want to support the cause, please contact Denise Harrington  here . You don't need to be present to win.

Great Concert Season Concluding

The Music Department recently presented their end of the year concerts. The bands performed on Wednesday, April 17 ^th , the orchestra performed on Tuesday, April 30th, and the choirs performed on Wednesday, May 1st. Each group had a wonderful crowd and amazing performances from each of the groups. The highlight for each was recognizing the outgoing senior class for their contributions to each group throughout their time here at West.

 

In addition to our large group concerts, we do have one other performance to consider attending. The Honors Music Recital will be Monday, May 13 ^th  at 7:30 p.m. at First Congregational Church just north of downtown Glen Ellyn. This is a performance by outstanding soloists and small ensembles from band, choir, and orchestra. Please join us for a wonderful night of great music making.

 

59 ^th  Annual Glenbard West Art Show

Art students recently capped off yet another successful year with Glenbard’s 59 ^th  Annual Student Art Show. A retired art teacher judged over 450 Glenbard West works of various media, representing the very best of this year’s student production. Numerous winners walked away with awards purchased by our Glenbard West Boosters. Celeste Sevilla , was chosen as the District Purchase Award, in which the district will pay the artist to mount the piece and be permanently hung either at the District office or here at Glenbard West.   (pictured below)

Congrats to all our award winners. Our West show follows the very successful District 87 Art Show hosted by Glenbard North in March that showcased works from students from all the Glenbard High Schools. 

Theatre Main Stage Season Finale

The Glenbard West Theatre third and final main stage show,  Still Life with Iris , thrilled audiences of all ages. Over three hundred students from local elementary schools attended a matinee performance on April 12th. The fourth and fifth grade students extended their learning experience after the show by using a study guide provided by West Theatre which included fun, educational activities.  Iris  also had three well received performances April 11 - 13 for general audiences.

Still ahead for Theatre are the  Black Box New Plays , which include two student written shows: the comedy  Bucket Ruckus  by Lizzie Mowry and Will Davenport, and the musical  Falling From Afar  by Brye Sebring. Both shows can be seen May 2nd and 3rd at 7:00pm, and May 4th at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Tickets are not sold in advance, so we recommend you arrive early due to limited seating.



Theatre Awards Night is Wednesday, May 15th at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. All students who have been involved in this year's productions and their families are encouraged to attend! Over five thousand dollars in scholarships will be presented, awards given, next year's theatre season announced, and much more!

As we enter the final month of the school year, it is important to reflect on the tragedy that occurred within our community. Our Student Services department has been working closely with many students and their families in the aftermath. Several people have inquired as to the best ways to support their grieving teen. 

Often, what a grieving person needs most is a willing person to support them. This may mean being able to sit with the grieving person and listen to his/her feelings in a nonjudgmental way, without trying to problem-solve. Though it can be awkward or uncomfortable when feeling as though you may not know what to say, in most cases, what is most valuable is a pair of ears that is willing to hear the story. Below is a list of some important key concepts/suggestions that we feel are worthy of mentioning:

Additionally, we would like to re-introduce you to the Student Services Team that is available at Glenbard West to assist students who may be continuing to struggle with the loss. In our roles at West, we also help teens with a variety of other issues such as: stress at school, LGBTQ+ concerns, eating disorders, anger management issues, peer problems, family issues, improve problem solving strategies, academic support, substance abuse prevention, responsible choices in sexual decisions, help for friends, self-injurious behaviors, anxiety, depression, grief & loss.

How students can seek help for themselves or for a friend?

Please do not hesitate to reach out to any one of the Student Services staff members if you have any questions and/or concerns.  

The Gdub Yoga Club started in 2013 with two students who felt stressed and wanted a way to gather students to unwind and manage it better, plus they thought yoga would be fun. 

And it has been! The club meets every Wednesday before school with Mr. McCluskey as the moderator and Ms. Julie Mackey leading the yoga instruction. 

Two years ago, the District created an initiative to bring more mindfulness activities to the students and staff. The yoga club student board was encouraged by the initiatives that School Counseling was creating to utilize the new mindful space on the 4th floor bridge of the science wing. Last school year we launched "Mindfulness Meditation" on the 1st Wed of the month. The mindful sessions are led on rotating basis with staff from School Counseling, Social Work, Student Services and Julie Mackey depending on everyone’s schedule. There are yoga mats/meditation cushions provided in the Bridge and the atmosphere really lends itself to a peaceful experience before school with the sun rising. It’s become everyone’s favorite spot. The other Wednesday’s of the month, the club meets in the dance arts room in Biester. With the help of the Boosters, PE budget, and the football program, we have enough mats, blocks and yoga straps for 75. All are welcome to join!

Each Quarter teachers across the various departments at Glenbard West choose the one student who best exemplifies excellence within their discipline. The Glenbard West community remains strong because of these students. We congratulate the Departmental Recognition Award Recipients and we thank the families and teachers who have helped them along the way.

It’s been a long winter, but one of the signs of summer coming is the Board of Education approving our list of summer capital improvement projects. We continue to make improvements to our buildings as part of our 10-year master facility plan. We are very thankful for the community’s support of our 2014 referendum, which makes these improvements possible.

Here’s a look at Glenbard West projects completed in the past three years:

·          New classroom wing, including eight science classrooms, two green roofs, solar panels,

receiving dock, photography lab and science department office

·          Added air conditioning throughout the building

·          Added energy efficient LED lighting in most areas of the building

·          Renovated six science classrooms into eight larger classrooms

·          Created a writing lab

·          Replaced roof over a wing of the main building

·          Replaced floor in four classrooms and boys PE locker room shower

·          Added locker room in Biester field house

·          Added permanent bleachers at Memorial Field

·          Repaired four tennis courts

·          Reconstructed masonry parapet

The following are projects we will complete at Glenbard West in summer 2019:

·          Field house lighting replacement

·          Auditorium carpet flooring replacement

·          Façade improvements – parapet reconstruction

We anticipate all capital project work to be completed before Aug. 2.

Glenbard West is a beautiful school, and much like maintaining our homes, we need to invest in renovations and repairs to the building. I am proud to work in a community that supports our students and staff, as well as our facility plans.

Required supplies are covered by students fees. Physical Education uniforms and locks will be included in the Freshman fees. Soph, Juniors and Seniors will be able to purchase new uniforms from their PE teacher after the first day of school. During Back-to-School days, students receive official class schedules, student lockers and busing information. Yearbook and ID photos are taken at this time; dress code applies.

Freshman Orientation

7:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. in the Auditorium 

Remember to send your student with a form of payment for any past due fees:  Check, cash or Visa/MasterCard is accepted. Please make checks payable to Glenbard West High School - students will fill in the amount owed and will receive a receipt for their purchase. If using a check as payment, be sure your student has multiple checks for all yearbooks, West Nation passes, Booster Family Activity passes, Glenbard Gear and any other items of interest, as they are all purchased separately.

 

FRESHMAN & TRANSFER STUDENTS ONLY:  After going through the Back-to-School stations, all freshmen, & transfer students receiving iPads for the first time, will be required to stay for a 1½ hour District 87 iPad training. At this time parents may leave and either come back to pick up their student or allow their student to take the bus home. Upon completion of training, all students will be allowed to take their iPads home. Non-freshman transfer students will return for this training during the 11:30 time slot on August 8th. No one will be issued an iPad without this training.

Transportation:   Glenbard West will provide two shuttle busses from 10:00 a.m. to approximately 2:00 p.m. These busses will run every 15 minutes and will depart from the back of the main building. The purpose of the busses is to take students home following iPad training. Please see the Bus Drop-off Locations chart below and discuss the best drop-off site with your student. Note that parents are responsible for getting their students to Glenbard West at their scheduled time. See the chart above for the Freshman Back-to-School Day/iPad Training and Deployment schedule.
