Dear AUHSD Parents/Guardians:

I am writing to update our parent community following the meeting of the AUHSD Governing Board on Wednesday in which they discussed the plan to bring students on campus for in-person learning.

District administrative staff presented a plan for a progression of student opportunities to come on our campuses in October and November for academic and social-emotional support and connection with staff and peers. The first phases to the plan's progression have started and implementation will continue in the coming weeks. The plan would lead to an in-person and distance learning hybrid model of teaching and learning to begin in the 2nd semester. The Board discussed the plan and ultimately asked staff to bring revisions reflecting a more ambitious plan for bringing students on campus. The Board will discuss the matter again during their meeting on October 21.

The issue of opening up our schools for in-person learning has certainly become a very controversial topic within our community. We hear from many parents and students that we must open our schools faster. We hear from many that we should be more cautious. And we hear from many expressing that we must maintain a high quality distance learning program for those who choose not to return when we phase to the hybrid model. Our charge is to best meet the needs of all, but to do so safely.

You will be receiving a survey early next week for you to share more about your perspective and intents around your student returning to our campuses for support and/or the hybrid learning model. We hope that you will complete the survey as the results will significantly impact program offerings and design.

Undoubtedly, these are difficult times. We are reminded daily of the risks associated with COVID-19. While the public health COVID-19 data in our community has gotten better and better, we know this can change quickly as the county loosens restrictions and entities open up. We also know that our behaviors, including wearing a mask and physical distancing, will be more and more critical as we enter this next phase and as the weather changes and flu season commences. Please encourage your student to continue these behaviors not just for their health, but for the health of others. These behaviors will be absolutely essential as we bring more students on campus in the coming weeks.

Take care and stay well.

Sincerely,
