We of Joy Lutheran Church foster
grace-filled relationships with Christ
through worship, fellowship, and service.

The Easter season is a week of weeks, seven Sundays when we play in the mystery of Christ's presence, mostly through the glorious Gospel of John. Today we gather with the disciples on the first Easter, and Jesus breathes the Spirit on us. With Thomas we ask for a sign, and Jesus offers us his wounded self in the broken bread. From frightened individuals we are transformed into a community of open doors, peace, forgiveness, and material sharing such that no one among us is in need.

The Breakfast Club Meets This Saturday
Please join us Saturday morning at 8:00AM for breakfast and fellowship. We'll start some maintenance projects around 9:00AM. In addition to some inside work, we'll be sweeping some of the sand and gravel away from our entrances, sidewalks and some of the parking areas near the doors. If you have a push-broom, please bring it. Also, you may want a dust mask or handkerchief for your face - it can get pretty dusty!

The Joy of Reading Book Club
The Joy of Reading Book Club meets on the 3
rd
Monday of every month around 6:30 PM. Everyone is invited to come join us for a light dinner plus fun and lively book discussion.

Other Joyful News...
Alaska Synod Assembly
This year's Synod Assembly will be held at Central Lutheran Church in Anchorage (15
th
Ave. and Gamble) beginning Friday at 2 pm through Sunday noon. Joy will be represented by Lois Lester, Ian Soellers and Pastor Martin. While these three are our official Voting Members, guests are always welcome to attend any of the parts of the Assembly. At this Assembly, we will be electing (or re-electing) a bishop, so people may be interested in that process. A draft of the Assembly schedule is up on the bulletin board in the narthex.
Synod Assembly Meals
Central Lutheran will be our hosts for Synod Assembly. It is customary, however, to ask nearby congregations for help in some areas, especially with meals. Each of the Anchorage and Eagle River/Chugiak ELCA congregations have been asked to help supply one of the meals for Assembly.
We have been asked if we can supply Lunch on Friday, April 27. We need food for about 30-50 people.
There now a sign-up in the narthex for various food that we need for our lunch. We are trying provide a simple, light meal where people can build their own sandwiches or combine the various food in any way they wish. We are trying to provide some Vegetarian and Gluten-Free options as well. There will be water and coffee supplied.
Let's plan on an "Assemble the Assembly Meal" party on
Thursday, April 26th at 7:00PM in the kitchen, where we can set up the platters, cover with wrap, and whatever else we think needs to happen.
Treasures & Tasty Treats Fundraiser -
Coming May 6
Spring has sprung! It's time to rally together for another potluck and fundraising auction at Joy before we start going different directions for summer.
Join in on May 6 with a contribution of food and one of your treasures. Are you crafty? Do you have time or talents to offer someone? Maybe you're in the market for something?
++ Auction items can be brought to church on Sunday morning May 6, dropped at the office between Monday, April 30 - Thursday, May 3, or by special appointment with Pr. Martin. (The office will be closed Friday, May 4.)
On Sunday morning we'll enjoy our repast after worship, all the while trying to outbid one another on the item (or items?) we have our eye on. Cash, check or charge will all be accepted forms of payment.

Other Ordination News
Our previous Intern, Melissa Johnson has received a call from
St Paul Lutheran in Winlock, Washington. Melissa will be ordained into the ministry of Word and Sacrament on Sunday, June 17th at St. Paul. Winlock is a small community about 45 minutes south of Olympia, Washington. St. Paul's website is:
Mikah Meyer at Worship on June 24th
Join NPR featured guest speaker/National Cathedral countertenor singer, Mikah Meyer, as he shares about his world record, 3-year road trip to all 417 National Park Service sites, how being a Lutheran pastor's kid inspired it, and the huge, unique role Alaska plays (*hint, it has to do with bush planes!).
Mikah has been living in a cargo van while traveling across the U.S. for the past 26 months becoming the youngest person to visit the entirety of the National Park System--using the media and platform to share a message of carpe diem, hope, and acceptance for LGBT Christians. To keep this project going, he "sings for his supper" and receives donations to fuel him to the next park. Come hear him speak/sing, learn more about his ministry, and ask your questions in person.

Social Statements help shape teaching points for us in the ELCA and serve as tools for people and congregations for many years. This Social Statement is in process, which means the ELCA is looking for your thoughts and comments.
